Can someone please advise what the sprung loaded pin with a black plastic cap and threaded sleeve is for on the pannier carriers ?

Locking it up when you have no panniers fitted.

Edit . . . . Doh, I misread the first post. The posts below give the correct answer.

As above, for holding it down.
When the frame is folded away there is a plastic clip to hold it in the up position.

So am I missing the plastic clip - the actual picture of the bike is above ? Also what does the pin go into to hold it in the down position ?

Is the clip part 20 shown below ? I can see the pin is part 13 but cannot see what it locates into ?

A picture of someones bike showing this would be greatly appreciated

The pin just locates under the bump stop; you may need to adjust it to make it work.

You need 2 x #20 clips. They hold the frames in place in the closed position.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply David , I'll order two of the clips . With the rack in the down position the pin does not go close enough to the bump stop to reach it even with it screwed /adjusted right in ?

Thanks

John

FWIW those clips break pretty easily. I welded two small rectangles to the pannier frame for the pin to catch on.

Clip # 20 is just for holding the frame in the open position. Save your money and use a velcro tie or something.

From your photo it appears that the plastic bump stop 'pad' #3 (part 71607668692) is broken/too short for the pin to connect behind.

They break easily, especially if you go on the trails with panniers off, and cost a small fortune. Try welding something on for the pin to catch for a tougher solution.

I think that is the problem now you have explained . The plastic bump stop must be shorter than it is supposed to be - might also explain why it rattles about loosely as well - guessing that it should have a forward section that goes over the small metal tab on the pannier frame . One of the stops is missing so I have ordered a new one so will know when i receive that one if the others are indeed broken .

Screw through pannier? I have a clamp that screws through my topbox which secures it - if that's what you mean - but not on the panniers...

You could buy a similar clamp for the panniers.
I bought a pair but in over 10-years of use only fitted them once as I fitted / removed the panniers every trip and they just made it a bit of a fag. Never had any problems with the panniers coming off without them fitted.

Yep reckon they're not necessary either, as long as that sprung pin has something to lock under. :thumb2

Here's my 'improvement' on the BMW 'pad' done last year in Morocco. Still needs a tidy up and a spot of paint... :D
