I have a 2005 GS and can smell fuel from the fuel cap. I can see that I can replace the rubber seal on the cap from a kit for an RT/LT of the same age(not listed as replaceable on the GS) but hope you can help with a couple of questions
On my bike the metal plate is behind the rubber washer / seal but on looking at photos of the cap on the net it is shown as the seal is behind the metal plate (spring washer perhaps?)
Can the cap be stripped down and cleaned and replace any other seals?

Cheers

I would say that you should strip the plastics off the tank and verify that it is the fuel cap and not a weep elsewhere passing up under the plastics

There is a gasket below the fuel pump housing and the filler cap housing AND of course the breather and drain pipes its a sensible move to order those before you start stripping bits off as the ones that are close to petrol and petrol vapour have a bad habit of swelling once they are released from their position

Thank you, I will start looking there first

Also Ring your nearest BM motorrad and ask them to check if you have any outstanding "Safety Campaigns" on your bike

They will ask for the last 7 digits of your frame number

There were two campaigns on Fuel issues Couplings and Fuel pump flanges But these are quite possibly not applicable to your bike
