Rebuilt my rear drive recently, is there a circlip on the out put shaft at the gearbox, ie on the splines, seems to be a groove there, haynes manual gives it a mention, but when I took it apart none there, ?.

Think they are in the drive shaft and clip on to the grooves.

I don't recall my driveshaft being at all difficult to remove from the gearbox. I did not check for a circlip but its likely there wasn't one in there.

Saying that, I do get some driveshaft vibration (always have) so who knows(?)

They are part number, 26 11 8 527 718 SNAP RING - 22X2,5MM

There seems to be different part numbers for the drive shaft, one has the snap ring as a separate part and the other doesn't.??

26 11 7 665 803 DRIVE SHAFT, no snap ring part number. GS 05-07.
26 11 7 706 394 DRIVE SHAFT, snap ring available. GS 08-09.

Still confused, these driveshafts on bmw are shite, they always feel like a slack chain, on and off throttle feels like delayed actionm can feel a jap coming.eh a bike that is .

Drive shaft should certainly not feel like a slack chain. There should no play at the splines or in the joints. Unless they are worn out.

All, good, ujs have no play, mike rebuilt the drive, splines perfect, in gear the rear wheel has about 2 inches of take up ?

Measured where & how?

There will be an angular limit of rotational freeplay specified somewhere,

once you know that you can see whether your in or out of spec

Yup sounds about right The main shaft has a "thing" on it which is supposed to stop excessive strain on the input shaft

If I remember I will take a pic later

Gearbox has a ramped torque shock device but there will always be backlash in any gearbox. Parallel shafts are worse than epicyclics.
