Check the ABS tell tale light lights up and then goes out as you pull off ( within 100 meters of movement)

Put it on the centre stand, and hold the rear wheel at 12 & 6 oclock push the wheel away and toward you there should be no play do the same at 9 & 3 push and pull the wheel away & toward you

again no play -

this is where its tricky, bmw say a little bit of play is acceptable... but i'd go with the concencus no play is acceptable - if there is any play factor in a hub rebuild (mikeyboy is the man to go to)

Service history - If it's all main dealer, then you laughing - indy & home serviced, take with a pinch of salt, it may well have been done perfectly correctly, but a stamp can be obtained anywhere ;)

Looke at the oil filter, it should be Mahle branded, if int any other make tick the caution flag

check what oil was used in the service, you can use fully synthetic, but i believe the norm is 10-40 20-40(50) Mineral oil

There not the quietest of bikes, but there should be no untoward clattering, you will get injector & some valve timing noise.

then i'd say overall conditon & extras ( vario pannier set, crash bars, aux lights etc )

final drive - play in rear wheel.

also check if clutch replaced and if any slip

it has bmw service history, its coming from a reputable garage, was just wondering with the high miles for problems down the line as i intend to keep it for a few years

High miles? 3200 per year. These are adventure bikes, don't you know? They're meant to be ridden!

Oh no, not another signature....

Fuel strips , check if suspension has been rebuilt / replaced might be getting a little tired now. Clutch is a day job if needs done.

Are you mechanically minded? If so I would take a punt but not at dealer prices , to be fair it is roulette at 12 yrs old ,no matter what make of bike , if you can do most of the maintenance yourself then not so bad , has the bike got esa suspension ,abs etc as these just add to the bill if goes wrong , and if your luck is out and you are relying on garages this can soon become a money pit.
I’m assuming the dealer is asking around 5k at that money you could get a 2015 tracer 900 / 2015 tiger 800 etc low mileage.

Final drive £450 ish to sort out IF it goes, shock about £120 to sort WHEN is goes, both from excellent guys on this forum. Engines and gearbox very robust. The alternator belt should have been changed by now....if not easy to do. Go on condition....should be a great bike.

I've got the same bike. Just clocked over 150 000 miles. The engine is sound. I've replaced the alternator a few times. Replaced rear brake caliper, rear brake master cylinder. A few stick coils replaced. All due to weather damage/rust, easy to do yourself with 2nd hand parts. Final drive has been done a few times (only 2 times though,
must be due new bearings soonish). On 2nd set of ESA shocks. Still on origional clutch, lol, that might be a record. Awesome bike, only broke down once (due to faulty stick coil). Still on origional fork oil and seals as well, lol, just ordered replacements.

You could check for oil around the final drive, my gearbox oil seal failed once. Not hard to change these yourself. Mine is on the origional gearbox so that should be sound.
