2009 GSA fuel tank onto 2011 GS are they compatible.

So been trying for a while to sell the GS to allow me to buy a GSA and getting nowhere. Lots been in touch but something has come of it.

Markets at a real low and I’m not giving the bike away. So I’m planning on looking at swapping in a GSA fuel tank as the bikes had everything done on it but I just prefer the bulk a protection a GSA provides. So makes sense to work with what I’ve got.

I’ve found this guide to follow and have all winter to do it. I know a lot say it’s complex but reading through this guide it seems straight forward enough.

So I’ve found an 09 large tank but will it be same for the twin cams? I can’t see them changing them but just thought I’d ask if anyone happens to know before pushing the button?

Any thoughts as usual greatly appreciated.

Tank will be the same, yes.
However there are many more parts need. Panels, brackets, the fuel distribution manifold, maybe pumps. 09 tank wont have fuel level float whereas if your bike is an 11 it will. Certainly do able, I have done just this myself. Once you have everything it is pretty straightforward although time consuming. Gathering everything together will be the hardest part. I was unfortunate and bought everything from someone on here who was doing the opposite.

I’ve the tank off today as I’m sitting aux lights. So it was straight forward getting it removed.

So far, I’ve a tank with pumps, the infil panels and brackets. So need to determine pipe with and distribution manifold.

Motorworks list a used fuel distributor for £35 and lower front tank brackets for £9 each side. Tank panel £60. Used stuff needs a phone call to check availability however. Worth ringing anyway, tell em what you are doing and they will probably be able to help with anything else you might need.

Yes been in touch with them and they are limited on what they have left they said.

Depending on the tank make sure you get the correct top cover panel as pre twin cam and twin cam gsa covers are not interchangeable

I only know because I was going to change the colour of my 2011 hexhead gsa and bought secondhand bodywork to get sprayed , the beak was fine but when I double checked the tank cover the fixing locations and shape were different. Ended up getting a used gsa twin cam cover , then never bothered and sold the parts on in primer.
Still gave the pre twin cam gsa tank cover in the loft.
It is 10 years ago since I sold the twin cam and cannot remember if the actual tank itself is different

Don’t suppose you know if it’s between 2006 and 2013 that works as this appears to be what real oem suggests.

I’m not sure if Neil had a piece prior to 2006?

Are we thinking that there is like 3 variations?

So the 2004-2006 are one shape.

2006-2009 are another

Then 2010-2013 were a third??

I’ve been trying to compare them all on eBay and images off google and there is definitely a difference from 04 models and later 06. However o can’t really see a difference after 06 through..

Very confusing, really don’t want to buy a new one..

The GSA tank has a quick release and same electrical connections on the left hand side of the image, then on the right there is another quick release. Im not sure what where this or what i need to plumb in to the new tank.

On closer inspection the existing fuel pump has two quick release lines. The rear one is fitted via the rubber pipe. So hopefully that can be swapped to the right hand side of the new tank.. must be the return line.

Don't be fooled by the pictures they are not always accurate representations. But you do need the GSA pipework one as per your last photo, it is specific to the GSA tank. Wiring should be the same.
