2010 De cat ?

Any one here had the courage to cut the cat out of the header pipes on the 2010 GS yet ? or try decat headers ? Wondered if it would improve as much as the 08 model :cool:
 
Hi all

px 08 gs for 10 gsa month ago took my keihan headers and akropovic off
fitted it straight on new bike ,removed cables from motor that controlled thottle valve ,works fine at all revs,and downchanges, no cutting out etc,looks and sounds even better then before.

That's v. interesting. Does it go any faster as well as sounding better? So the throttle valve motor is still attached but the thottle valve removed? Have you tried removing the throttle valve motor? I wondered if the system would throw up a fault if the motor went 'missing'?

Not sure about removing motor,but easy job to disconnect cables and leave unit there,bike always sounds faster when removing cat :thumb2 ,sensers seem to cope with all emmisions so no hesitation or flat spots when riding

Yes but....have you had it on the dyno to check the air/fuel ratios? If you haven't, I suggest you do it ASAP and be prepared to buy a Power Commander or similar device and have the fuelling remapped.

'08 onward bikes run very lean as standard. Removing the cat leans them off even further with potentially disastrous consequences. People seem to think that the lambda sensors will somehow compensate but they'll only do this when the system is operating in closed-loop mode, ie at relatively low revs and small throttle openings. When you open the bike up and it goes into open-loop, if the engine's fuel requirements go outside the parameters of the fuel map in the ECU and the trims applied to it, it's going to run too lean. Do that for too long and *POP*...!

point taken 08 bike went on dyno no problem fuel ratio fine, next step dyno for new bike,spoke to bmw engineer before removing original pipe,bikes do run lean but only seem to cause few problems with combined different air filter and cat removed, Took advice before even i would attack such a job with brand new bike,hope it helps a bit

people will not listen mate, i just feel sorry for the people who buy their bikes in 6 months time,
i never understood how people buy an obviously big heavy adventure tourer, and then thing they can add a ''can'' to make it faster.
the best mod you can do to these bikes that will make them faster is

learn to ride them properly
upgrade the suspension
better lights

Perhaps but if the fuelling is set up properly, a decat can make a big difference. I had a full Remus system on my '04 and '07 bikes and it was much better in the mid range and at the top end. The '07 was, however, notably leaner, judging by the exhaust gas temperatures. My local dyno guy told me that he'd dyno'd one '07, running a full system, which was dangerously lean. The owner who's on here contacted me later and sent me a copy of his new fuel map.

'08 onwards bikes were fuelled even leaner out of the factory with '09 bikes being, I believe, leaner still (the Power Commander basemaps are certainly different between '08 and '09 bikes). I've only fitted my Remus can to my current '09 bike but if I ever get round to fitting the headers, I'll be fitting the Power Commander which I have sitting here, putting it on the dyno and getting a custom map made up. The other option for owners of 2010 bikes would be to buy a Power Commander V + the Autotune wideband lambda sensor kit which will then allow the bike to run in closed-loop mode all the time and after initial set up, map itself on-the-fly.

Back in 2004, when the 1200 was launched, both Remus and Akrapovic advertised their full systems as being able to be fitted without any adjustment to the bike's fuelling. That may well have been true 6 years ago but there have been many revisions to the OE fuel map since then and it's no longer a good idea to just bung a full system on a 1200 without at the very least checking the AFR's on the dyno.
 
so so true, but how many on here say they have fitted a power commander or techlusion?? not many, so here lies the problem, so many 1200 out there running lean to dangerous on throttle,

and the reason for the exhausts is so when that ''throttle'' is open is gives a louder noise.

rather than risk damage, i think the fuel air mass sensor upgrade is the way to go, as it costs a few quid and makes so much difference without affecting too much.
 
These mods are not to make the bike faster just to improve throttle responce and smooth out flat spots which are clearly evident on the 08 models Exhaust note is a personal thing, for me the std can on the 08 is to quiet at motorway speeds the exhaust note is lost against the wind noise and the 2010 is a little loud, the Bos can i have on mine is a good compromise, only my opinion of corse ! :cool:

This is very true,i like the look of an after market pipe on my bike.and the sound,if i want to go fast i get my track bike out and, blat around brands.just because i change the headers and pipe does not mean i am looking for top speed gains. I offer no technical advice about changing the pipes ,just posted mesage to say i had, just my opinion ok

I think on the R1150 GS there was a mod that switched the ECU to an OE fuel map designed for new pipes and no cat installations. Now just perhaps this was carried over to the 1200GS? What we need to find is how to switch the 1200gs ECU to the no cat etc, fuel map. Does anyone have any ideas?
 
I keep reading time after time how headers and a pipe can damage your bike and make it blow up, perhaps anyone this has happened to can let us no.

I brought my Remus Headers and can from the dealer who i brought the bike from and they fitted them from new, they do not invalidate my warrantee and if it blows up I am covered :thumb2

Does anyone here really think that BuMW would allow a BMW approved after market piece of equipment cause damage to their engine and to have to replace it at their cost :nenau

doesn't make good business sense to me.

I think you'll find that the only BMW approved aftermarket exhaust is the Akrapovic Titanium exhaust can and as we've discussed previously, just fitting a can without the headers is unlikely to take the bike's fuelling requirements outside the parameters of the ECU's map.

So how did two BMW approved dealers sell me and fit my Remus headers and can if they are not approved, as i stated, i asked if it affected my warrentee and was told no by two separate dealers, NOG and Vines.

I guess the answer is for anyone wanting to change from OE parts should check with the dealer first, i did and i am happy that my modifications are approved by BMW and they will cover any damage caused by the fitting of the parts :thumb2
 
Spoke to my bmw dealer workshop engineer yesterday,they have not had any BLOW UP they see a lot of bikes with cans and decat headers.
 
The basic parameters that determine the optimum engine operation point are still engine speed and throttle butterfly angle (monitored by a separate potentiometer on each cylinder). Applying additional engine and ambient parameters (such as engine temperature, air temperature, and air pressure), engine management, together with control maps and correction functions (contained within the system) tailor the injection volume and ignition timing exactly to engine's current requirements.

This is from the original BMW press release for the 04 R1200GS. I've highlighted the interesting parts for this thread. Now the accelerator booster mod plays with the air temp input to give a richer mixture now I'm thinking that the air pressure sensor must be used to tell the bike electronics at what altitude the bike is currently at. As this measurement is very in-sensitive (does it measure feet or miles?) perhaps all the ECU does is richen or weaken the map across its entire RPM range and this is just what we want for a de-cat/free flow exhaust. The richen bit anyway. So all we need to know is where is the sensor, how does it work and with a bit of luck shorting the sensor to ground will simulate operating at below sea level and give a richer fuel map :)
