2010 factory fit alarm setting

Had my brand new 1200GS for about 3 weeks now (which I am loving) but the alarm is p***ing me off big style.

For some reason the 'off' button on the remote doesn't work, and the alarm appears to be only truly off once the engine is running.

Even if I turn the ignition on (and obviously off so that I can then unlock the panniers) before stuffing them full of rubbish, the alarm still bloody goes off (after a gap of about 30 secs or so) when I rock the bike.

Has anybody else come across this issue? I have even looked at the manual (yes, it's annoying me that much) - which appears to work on the assumption that the 'off' button works...

I had a datatool alarm on my old GS which had an on off button but when I got my GSA with the BMW alarm I found that the buttons work differently,
if you want the motion detector off you have to press button 1 twice just after you turn the bike off. if the motion detector is on and you move the bike the alarm will give you a warning that it is going to go off, if this happens you have to press button 2, this will stop it going off but 30 seconds later unless you turn off the motion detector the alarm will reset.
I will admit the manual is not that clear but it is all explained it there albeit a bit long winded.
There is a paragraph that explains how to turn the alarm off totally by pressing the button 1 a number of times before turning the ignition off and then again when the ignition turned off.
I had to read the manual 3 times and follow it with the bike before I could understand it.

I have a 2010 GSA with the BMW alarm and mine deactivates fully as soon as I turn the ignition on. I wasn't aware it had an off button. I know there's 2 buttons, a smooth one and a rough one but thought one was to set it, the other was to do with settings, or motion sensor or something?

Do you use the kill/run switch to stop the engine ? If that switch is in the kill( don't run) position, then the alarm will not be de-activated when you switch the ignition on. That has caught me out hundreds of times

Understood. I would never have got the link to your riding instructor - never had such things in '78.

The manual for mine says that the remote off button will only work within one hour of the alarm being armed. After that time the receiver in the alarm is powered down to reduce battery drain. Mine certainly can be turned off with the remote immediately after it has been armed.

Mine used to be like that and had to disarm using the ignition. After the 12K service at Bahnstormer everything changed and I could turn it off on the fob at anytime. I assumed a software change during the service did the trick. So far have had no battery issues with any drain from the alarm but then its on an Optimate whenever I'm not on it.

You can program the alarm to do various things to suit yourself ,such as the type of tone when it goes off, confirmation tones when you press button or no tone etc.

I've spoken to my dealer...

It would appear that the alarm/remote is programmable via the smooth button, and that mine is currently set for 'passive arming'.

So I'm going to tell the dealer to re-program it at the 600m service - nice and simple is going to suit me - switch the alarm on with the hashed button and off with the smooth one.

Didn't you get the manual for the alarm?

My 2005 GS has a BMW alarm fitted & I followed the instructions in the manual to switch from passive to active.

I did get a little manual for the alarm with the bike - it doesn't mention programming though
