I was told by the BMW chap that the changes to the new switchgear is the result of EU type approval standardisation. Not sure if he was talking shite or not, but I cant believe BUMW would choose to do something which is likely to pish off a lot of prospective buyers unless they had to? Having said that I quite like to new switches as for me it is a return to my old jap bikes set-up. It does not feel quite as substantial as the existing gear but a bit simpler to use.

Unlike me who has a real problem with it bit I WILL get used to it cos it's the only thing I have a problem with.

I find it best on roundabouts, leaving on say 3rd exit, instead of having to move hand a fair bit to reach indicators to signal your leaving the roundabout. Its just a small thumb click down.

Then again i have only been riding 6 months :augie

Of course, any benefit you may have from the left hand does not outweigh the massive pain of having to cancel with your right hand whilst accelerating away off the rounabout.

It's a workable system, but still shite. And the worst bit is the resultant position of the horn and high beam - again shite. At least BMW have finally understood the problems.

True, first time on the test ride i hit the horn instead of the indicator :blast

I found indicating to move off the roundabout, and cancelling just before you put the beans on is good

Some people talk sooo much shite.

I just don't get what the issue is wth indicator switches. You get used to it. Period. Quite often cars have indicator stalks on different sides - same issue, less moaning yet more cars sold than bikes. And light / horn controls are all different on bikes and cars yet no one moans about that.

If you can't easily switch from one bike to another, with different indicator systems then perhaps you shouldn't be on the road?

Or have a brain the size of a pea? (which maybe is the issue with the journos / idjuts that keep banging on about this).

Hitting the indicator if you have to use the horn in an emergency is too easy with the current system apart from that I don't really care what system is on the new bike.

What I would have liked to see on the new GS/GSA is more power and less weight, better reduction of engine vibes in top at around 70mph, better paint quality and less consumption of oil. Maybe a longer top gear for motorways....

no oil top ups ever in 16k,
i cant even feel my engine running at 70mph on my gs, before anyone says anything-yes im sure its still working

MOT time

Ages since I have posted here, trust you are all well. My 06 reg 07 model is due its first MOT at the end of the month and I was interested to hear about the new model.
Does anyone know when it's expected to go on sale? I did not see it mentioned in the MCN article.
For the record I have had excellent service/reliability apart from the usual fuel pump and every other fix known to BMW inc new gearbox. Still love it though, the only thing that has not gone is the final drive (that's done it!!)
Probably won't change but you never know.
cheers :)

Switch Gear

i actually prefer the BMW switch gear, first time i used it was on the GS. Took a bit of getting used to at first, but after 10 mins it felt really natural, and i find it helps for a smoother riding style. Just a small movement of the thumb :)

Could not agree more - road a yamaha the other day and found it really hard to indicate with the one switch. The BM type is unusual but brilliant would find it hard to go back to one switch.:type

this is just blogging for the art of it .. this conversation is tedious.... Who cares? Both systems work if you get used to them... I think 1 switch like everyone else's bikes is easier and simpler. BMW wanted to do it their own way, so be it.... Now they don't anymore, whatever...

You 've got to be pretty sad soul NOT to buy a bmw because of the indicator switch being quirky, or not to buy a new one because you are an oldie on the marque and you re feeling the soul is being lost with the regular switch...

Personally, it took me a long time to get used to BMW triple switch, because being greek and all I rarely indicate! Only when its a matter of life and death and I really really have to warn somebody of intention.... Otherwise I just ignore it...lol

......maybe, but I'm yet to find a car with a button on each side of the steering wheel to put the indicators on and a cancel button to the right of the accelerator pedal :D

Anybody links to these pictures of the 2010 model I haven't seen them?

search my thread "photoshop or not" but it is a photoshop picture. No real changes next year new colours. ADV will be in yellow or black GS in 3 shades of grey.

Best indicators I ever used.....

.....were on a Harley! :thumb One on each side. Press to start. Press again to stop. Ergonomically good - feel was right where you wanted it.

What could be easier?!

I rode a K1300 a while back and putting to one side whether you like the Jap system or not - they just weren't in the right place. I've got big hands :augie and I had to take it off the grip to reach properly. What good is that?!

Switchgear - who cares,

I have in front of me many details of the new GS - which they say will probably be announced at the end of the year - at the Milan show?. The switchgear is the least of the changes; the main one is the doube overhead camshafts taken from the HP2 Sport with about 25 extra horse power and only minor styling changes and possibly new wheels,GPS incorporated on dashboard, exhaut pipe change;etc. This is all taken from the French magazine BoxRMag - but they do emphasise that the only thing that seems certainis the DOHC.I would say don't buy a facelifted 2009 model - is it called the SE in the UK? - until you hear about this one.
It won't make much difference in France where the present model already develops the maximum hp allowed by law.

Be very interesting to see if and where they put a GPS on the dashboard.

The current rumours here are settling on DOHC with 110HP same peak torque, but tuned to deliver more at lower revs, and revs more freely. Which sounds like a sensible use of the new technology to me. No talk of anything more than slight changes to styling, though a new exhaust could well be needed with the new engine.

I'd be really interested in any news you might have read about the new DOHC powered RT?

Cheers

Mike

The HP2 Sport produces 133bhp at 9500rpm with 115Nm of torque. I suspect the new GS will redline around the current peak of 7500rpm (hence 110 bhp), and will have the same peak torque but at a lower rpm to make it more accessible.

If correct I think it would make a lot more sense for this style of bike.

GS & RT

""I'd be really interested in any news you might have read about the new DOHC powered RT? "
I think I misread the bit about GPS on the dashboard - that is intended for the RT, not the GS; Again, according to BoxRMag, the new engine changes (DOHC) will apply to both the RT and the GS.
My OWN feelings are that the GS,the RT and in fact all the range are now so much cheaper in the UK than in Europe that BMW are going to have to upgrade right thorgh the range to give them a chance to bring up the UK price by quite a lot - 25% perhaps!
Look on the motorrad wbsites in German or French and you will see what I mean;
