I have a 2010 GSA fitted with an Akropovic exhaust system and I am looking to get the bike setup correctly. By 'correctly' I mean optimum power vs mpg. The current thinking is that the fueling is light due to the Akropovic (the bike has a stock OE type filter).

The options as I see them are either an engine remap (Hilltop et al) or fitting a device such as Power Commander or one of these AF-XIED, and I am looking for the pros and cons of each. Can I get some feedback from those who have tried/have the options mentioned above?

Remap you need to go there which is great if your in the area. You also need to keep going back if you change anything.
Power commander has people who can set them up all over the country. You can also learn how to do it yourself plus there are also people who put their maps on the Web that you can load. Might be slightly more expensive than the remap depending on what the bod with the dynojet charges.
No nothing about the AF.
There is another option where you get wide band o2 sensors and offset the reading to richer up the fuel. Will only do anything in closed loop though.
I have the power commander and trust me it works.

I've had mine remapped by Hilltop. Prior to that I used a Wunderluch Fuel Controller and before that an Accelerator module. I have an Akra can, remus headers and OEM air filter. In my opinion the remap is the most elegant solution and is bespoke for your bike. Every remap is different. I must have spent upwards of 3 grand buying bits & bobs for my bike and the remap is the best money spend of all of them. I am sure a power commander would give equal performance results but I prefer not to have the additional box of tricks fitted to my bike. I have no plans to sell and the piece of mind that the bike isn't running lean anymore is worth it as well.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Travelling to wherever isnt a problem for me - doesnt really matter where it is (just did 1900kms in 28hrs last weekend - dont ask - my ass is still killing me from the damned BMW car seat), I just want it right.

The bike has been kitted out as I want it, as those who are going to Mikeyboys workshop session this coming weekend will see if you ask him nicely, and isnt likely to be changing anytime soon (aka ever). I too have Remus headers with the akro endcan.

I initially thought the remap was the route to go as I have no need to sell the bike, but was interested in knowing how the remap effected the MPG rates. There has been a recent thread on severely reduced mpg but that seems to be an exception thread. Most people comment on "smoother power delivery" which is all well and good but I would like the best compromise of delivery vs mpg.

I have numerous other bikes and I use remapping software akin to the Power Commander function - and load in new tunes to suit exhaust and filter combination. I really dont have the desire to keep loading different tunes in to a Power Commander unit, and my concern about that route is that the 'shared maps' arent for my specific bike.

Well by the sounds of it you need to go to hilltop. You don't mind traveling and you don't want to mess about yourself so the remap is your best route IMHO.

Hi fella
I have a 2013 TC GSA thats a keeper, she ran reasonably well but quite vibey lots of soot round the tail pipes, de catted the header gave a better feel, had her re mapped and ignoring the willy waving stats all I can say is the bikes just sorted, revs better pulls better not quite as Vibey and I still get the same miles per tank.

Keilam header and Akro fitted.

I tinker and service but this sort of tweeking is best left to the experts, i just want to enjoy the ride.

Which I really do since getting Bertha sorted.

I've had both, the power commander will have a resell value a remap does not, only issue with a pc you need to coat the plugs with silicon grease to stop water getting in, mine was set up on a Dyno and each cylinder done separately and made more power then most reflashes.

PC all the way for me as it can be tuned to suit. I'll be at Mikeboy's on Sunday so have a go on mine and see what a difference a PC makes.

Oh, I've had a PC111 on mine for 3 years and been through some seriously extreme conditions and it's never missed a beat.

I have a 2009 GSA (single cam therefore) and have remus headers and akro end can. Had it remapped about a month ago. Results are excellent, smoother, strong midrange, more power. You asked about MPG though. Mine has barely been affected. If you cruise its exactly the same as was before, possibly even better. If you give it some it drops a few mpg but you've got more power there and to make more power you need to burn more fuel!!! On a mixed bag of roads I'm getting exactly the same figure on the computer as before, 49.5mpg...

Thanks for the further responses guys.

Appreciate the offer Bilko, but although my bike will be at Mikeyboys (you lot wont be able to miss it), I wont be as I will be on the Triumph Explorer for a weeks arsing about in Cornwall.

With the Power Commander Bilko, you said its never missed a beat in multiple extreme conditions - does it automatically adjust or is it still a manual thing you need to do?

Rich, thats good to know. As I said, the Hilltop remap was my first thought - a sort of 'fire and forget' solution - and its good to know that the bikes MPG isnt affected too much. My GSA has been built for a purpose and therefore if I do go down the remap route, the bike isnt likely to be sold on anytime in the next 5-7 years.

General question about Power Commanders - where is the best place to source them from? are they simple to fit? how is it recommended that the PC is setup for my specific bike and its configurations?

I have a PC-V bought used from another Tosser. His bike had almost the same exhaust/inlet setup as mine so I just plugged it in. Its running touch rich but made a huge difference. Will I get the PC dyno-ed or will I go to Hilltop? Ive still not decided. One issue could be insurance. The map is invisible.

The insurance 'issue' isn't a concern for me in this instance.

So am I correct in assuming that a PC still requires the bike to be 'tuned' to be set u correctly? If so, who and how much?

Mine is the same spec bike - the onboard computer tends to read 47.9mpg most of the time. Geoff's dyno shows mine at 109bhp/89 torques.

R1200GSA 2010 with Booster plug

Sweet as a nut.

With topbox, level ground, still warm day.

Booster plug the only mod.
