Hi All,

I have a 2010 GSA and want to change some corroded Torx / Star fixings on the plastic alternator cover and around the front of the engine casing which the plastic alternator cover is fixed to.

I'm able to see 3 torx fixings holding the plastic alternator cover.
Are there more which hold the cover on, if so how many?
What size and length are they? For example: M5 x 20mm etc
What torque setting?

I can see 12 torx fixings around the front engine casing.
Are there more which hold the cover on, if so how many?
What size and length are they? For example: M6 x 25mm etc
What torque setting?

Want to change the torx fixings to stainless steel hex head (Allen) fixings.

Obviously, accurate info required otherwise it could end in stripped threads etc.

Thanks for your help gents.

Cheers,

Rich.

Main casing bolts are M6 x 30mm TX30, plastic cover bolts are M5 but I'd need to check the length.

If you want a set of new stainless steel Torx fittings, ie. direct replacement in stainless, let me know. I bought the various sizes to replace a lot of the bolts around the engine and due to minimum quantities I have plenty spare! I keep meaning to list the sizes that make up a set but haven't had time yet.

Hi, if you Google Shaw Engineering they list the kits of good quality stainless fittings they sell, I've ordered at 3 o'clock in the afternoon and reveived them the next day. You can always phone them if in any doubt - they're very knowlegeable, Alan

My local bearing supplier whey cheaper £17 just for the front cover  I brought enough to do mine plus others for my xt was only a £5 :thumb

As for torque settings been Allen keys into alloy be careful ! I do them by hand only a m5 or m6 thread prob a quarter turn from seated.

Oh it's easy to just take one out of each cover to local supplier that way it's right 1st time :thumb2

Thanks for the info gents.

I'm able to get A2 / 316 (Food Grade) stainless steel fixings foc.

I would prefer A4 (Marine Grade) stainless steel fixings but this would cost.

Quite like the idea of keeping Torx / Star Drive fixings (A4 / Marine Grade preferably) on my GSA as standard but they'd have to be pretty inexpensive bearing in mind I'm able to get various A2 / 316 stainless steel fixings foc.

Stu (Bobbin-Man) you have a PM.

Remember to grease the threads if you are using stainless in alloy. They will corrode in and can be very difficult too remove in the future.
