When I bought my 2010 twin cam, having looked on here I was comforted in the knowledge that the new model had a revised final drive. Now like many riders I suspect at 15K I am getting towards the 20K and and upwards where drives have failed on earlier models. Interested to hear what mileages people have got up to without problems on their 2010 series - I am sure that riding style, extent of town use, and pillion/luggage has got something to do with it.
very sorry if this has been specifically covered somewhere else - I did a search with nothing useful apparent. most (all ?) of the failures in the register thread relate to earlier models.

ps how do you search for an exact phrase on here, again this is is something I have spent some time trying to solve before posting the question.

i dont think the early 2010 twin cam has the revised breather on the fd unit correct me if im wrong though

I was under the impression the breather is there to prevent pressure build up popping the outer oil seal - without a breather the oil quantity was reduced to 180ml from 220ml for the same reason. Err...I think anyway.

That's reasonable.

thanks for the clarifications guys but the original question to to 2010 series owners with or without breather is how many miles and any fd problems ? :thumb

The large bearing has a different part number for the drives with a vent fitted and also extra seals and a backup seal :thumb2
just wondered if the bearing is now open to the final drive oil :nenau
might make it last a bit longer.
Non vent drives have a double rubber shield type (2RS) bearing.

sounds like there are good reasons for a bit of optimism with the latest design at least as far as seal leakage which accounts for the majority of problems

can I re try my question this way - anyone done more than 25k on a twin cam with or without fd problems ?:thumb

have they increased the quantity again then?

I'm told its back to 240 ml and the plug at 3 o'clock is a filler/level plug.

I did measure how much oil was in my FD at 600 miles (when I changed it) and there was 240 ml. I then filled it using the filler/level plug and it contained 240 ml.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like a better setup, I assume you no longer have to remove the wheel to change the oil anymore.

Took me about 20 minutes on mine with the wheel already out, but from scratch it must be half hours work, I assume the new type takes nomore than 10 minutes.

You stil have to remove the wheel as the filler plug is still at the "back," so to speak.

Try putting your phrase in "quotes" - It works for most search engines

How much oil ??

Can anyone actually confirm the volumn of oil for the new final drive with the breather.. 180 or 240

Cheers

24,000 miless on my 2010 standard GS and the rear drive is fine :-)
