I am new to the world of GSs so need some advice. Just had a new final drive fitted at just over 15k miles on my 09 GS , is this normal ?? how long can I expect the new one to last ???

cheers Yeah all done under warranty, I must also say that I was well impressed with the level of service I recieved from Ocean BMW and Motorrad recovery.
Don't expect you BW dealer to do such a job. They're not set up for it and will charge around £900 to fit a new replacement.
There are a few guys on here offering a rebiuld service which seems to workout at a little under £300.
Alternetively if the outer seal has failed it can be replaced for less than fourty quid including oil if you are doing it yourself.
Although the diff is so say sealed for life, it is recomended you change the oil every 12000 or so. You will no doubt prolong it's life, but also identify a dodgey bearing before it leaves you stranded, just by the condition of the oil you drain out. If it's smelly you have a problem. This is easily done on the later 1200s, as they have a drain plug. Not so easy on the early models, bit of disasembly involved.
Personally I've never changed the diff oil, until recently when I changed the outer seal a couple of weeks back. But now I've had it apart once I'd happily do it agian.
Going to change my FD oil with each tyre change, only takes an extra ten minutes and £3 of oil when the back wheel is out.
Steptoe did a change just after last tyre went on, and as it is very simple on my '08 model I will do it myself from now on, also allows me to keep an eye on the oil coming out and hopefully catch any problems early.
The last stuff was minging and supposedly had been changed by the dealer 1500 miles earlier when I bought the bike, I suspect it had never been done but will know for sure if the next lot comes out far cleaner.
I don't understand the references to "smelly oil" as the stuff I put in mine, Castrol SAF-XO stinks when new. No different after 6K miles which is when I change it.
ive overhauled a couple now its fairly straightforward BUT,you will need a decent press, you will also need to fabricate a support to press the crown wheel assy out of the housing(i modified an old car flywheel)you will need the castilated socket to undo the pinion bearing ring and a good air impact wrench, youll also need to heat the whole unit to about 100 degrees.
