2010 tyre noise or final drive?

I've got a 2010 GSA with 1,000 k's (600 miles), that has a rythmic hum coming from the rear end. It's been there since the day I rode out the showroom. It is loudest at 70 Klm (45mph) in 5th on even throttle. Would some kind souls try their ride at similar speeds and let me know if they have a similar sound. I've tried Anakees and Tourances, it didn't make much difference.
If you don't have the noise, what tyres do you have?
I know I'll get a few comments about 'don't ride at those revs in 5th', I don't, but it may be indicative of a future failure Thanks, John

What did the dealer say:nenau
 
2010 tyre or final drive noise

The dealer heard the noise and tested one of their own bikes, it also had the noise but to a lesser degree. They spoke to BMW Australia who said they weren't aware of any issues and noted my concerns
 
on my trip to germany, I had on a couple of occasions (didn't note speed/gears) a hum type noise/sensation which seems to be felt as much as heard. It happened when I was leant over a little ie cornering and I also wondered briefly but put it down to running towards the dege of the tyre and I attributed it to running on the blockier part of the tyre - you got me worried now, let us know if you find any more information out.:eek
 
I've now done over 2.5k miles on my 2010 GSA and didn't even know I have a gear driven final drive. (quiet)

Its been over 20 years since my last Shaft Drive, its been chain and the odd belt drive since then.

That is the biggest thing that has amazed me about the BMW No Chains No Adjustment No Oil No Noise.
Suppose it will be different if like some on here, it all goes Tits Up :blast

Might help you.. My 2008 gsa had 2 complete final drive units and several bearings in it. I did not hear anything from it at any point even when it had failed. I did notice though every time it failed, oil would apper on the hub on
the nearside inner face.

My new 2010 GSA has 1000 miles on it and i havent heard a peep from it, the crappy karoo tyres are a bit noisey. Roll on when they are knackered and i can get TKC`s back on the beasty.:thumb2

Please tell me this a wind-up.

You'll be telling us next you didn't realise that your bike was water-cooled until you noticed the small radiator just below the head light... :D
 
Rythmic thrumming from the rear of the bike at certain speeds.

I have this on my 08 model.

had a look aroung and found some biggish pipes at the back (probably to do with the ABS I guess). two of them were open to the air so I plugged them with some mastic. They have a big stainless sleeve box thing holding them in.

It's much quieter now but hard to start.

Seroiusly, it may well be exhaust noise boucing around the back of the bike and making resonances. Change rider or bike and it probably won't happen.

My 09 GSA does exactly the same. Dealer test rode and said could not hear it. :nenau

Hi Dougie,

what tyres do you have on your bike?. Also have a look at the top of your instruments and see if the surround is being melted by the sun. My bike is only 5 weeks old, it's seldom been out in the sun, but it's being melted by the Adventure screen magnifying the sun rays. Happened when I put the Adventure screen on my previous 09 GS. BMW replaced it with a tinted scfreen.

Just replaced the OE Tourance EXP's at 7K with Anakee 2's. Just as a matter of interest the bike does not turn into bends [bike feels heavier] as easily with the Anakee's.
My bike never started making the noise until 5K miles. To start with I thought it was caused by the Tourances being nearly worn out but it's still the same with the new tyres and only in 5th gear between 40-60 mph.
As regarding the instrument cluster mine is ok but as it was new in Oct it has not had any strong sunlight on it yet.
At the end of June I will riding to the BMW meet at Garmisch and then on to ride a number of passes and 8 weeks after that I am am riding to Portugal. Will probably cover approx 6K miles and am wondering if the noise will get any better or worse. :nenau

i have been through 2 final drive bearings/ oil seals

tend not to make a noise, noticeable through vibrations in foot pegs, and rides like a flat rear tyre.

and oil dripping/ running out of final drive casing.

as someone else says

check tyres, including pressure.

it could be bearings though, they may not have been shimmed correctly in the Chinese, oops German factory.

is there play (tyre held at 3+9 oclock) when moved?
what about 6+12 oclock?

there should be a very slight movement 3-9,
