hi, fairly new to bmw and gsa,s, so although it might be a dumb question to a few people, here goes.

i bought a brand new 2012 gsa, from the dealers,i ran it in at around 5000rpm max sometimes just a little over, uk hills, and twisties, up and down the gears, then got up to 800 miles on the clock, and then i had it serviced at the dealers, oil change etc,

i have now done a total of 3600 miles,

so if you say ive done 2800 miles since the last service and oil check,

ive used 1 ltr of 10 50 castrol in 2800 miles, is that an excessive oil consumption or normal ??

They do use a bit until the are run in so don't worry tto much. Just be careful you are not overfilling though. As long as it's in the window you are good to go:thumb

cheers chaps,:beerjug: i have just been reading through some previous topics, and now i realise i have left the bike on the side stand for longish periods of up to a week at a time on many occasions, i will stop doing that now.

ps, how much 4t oil is in a gsa dohc engine???

Permissable consumption is 1liter to 1000km. As your using a full synthetic oil the bedding in process will take longer than if the engine was running on mineral oil. They will still use oil up to 12k. Check the level when the bikes hot and on the centre stand. Halfway up the sight glass is about right. Fill them to the top and you'll find they use more oil till the level gets to halfway. The best running in process for bm's is to use them from the off. By that i not meaning red lining them but not babying them either:thumb

I've used 3x1l top ups in first 5500 miles⚡

I've got a 2010 twin cam and I thought it was an oil burner, it hit 6k had a service and its been fine since, don't panic Captain Mainwairing.

I bought my 1200 GSA new this year & had covered 2,700 miles prior to a trip to France last week, I found I was putting in about 50ml or so every 200miles or so, I did a straight 600 mile into Central france quite a lot of fast riding, in 900 miles I used 1 Litre of 10/50 and was getting quite concerned. The next 1000 miles over there were quite demanding up and down the Box and quite warm temperatures, I put in about 40mls before the return trip and door to door was about 650 miles and not a drop used, so it would appear that hard riding has done it good presumably the rings have settled in, discussing it at the dealership today, they say no one bike seems to be the same, some do and some dont.

As soon as the engine is up to temperature work it fairly hard after 5000 miles minimum you should see a dramatic fall in oil consumption.

oooh. I never even thought about that. (its a new bike to me too). Because of tight parking, I can only leave it on the prop stand... Should I worry and find alternative parking somewhere?

mine drinks it like a fish

gs1200 two years old full service history
Just back from europe trip 2500 miles and at least 2lt of oil
petrol cheap costing a fortune in oil

going in for 18k service next week bet i just get told they all do this
dispite the fact that this is my fourth and none of the rest did

Oil consumption

My mate and I purchased new bikes at the same time (got a good discount) in 2011. Mine consumed a lot of oil and used the same volume you have. My mates bike did not consume any! Now I have completed 8500 miles - about run in and it does not use much at all. On a long trip to France in June with hard riding my mates did burn some. Been told this is normal. :beerjug:

2010 twin cam. Semi-synthetic when new.Minimal oil used Full synthetic put in at first service. Used a fair bit of oil.6000 service back to semi-synthetic on my instruction.Minimal oil use. 12000 same hardly any oil used.

Great British trained mechanic works for Mottorad here in Xania Crete. Bmw recommend 20/50 mineral but changed every 5000k (3000miles). Says synthetic oil comes out like water (but fine for the closer engineering tolerances of water cooled engines.)

Recommendations seem to follow profit margin for BMW/Castrol and have no real relevance to the requirements of a basic agricultural twin (which is why I love it - water cooling - keep it. Riding all day today at over 30c in Northern Greece up and down mountain passes , two up with full luggage. Temp gauge never above normal.
