I would go for the basic spec with heated grips and then spend the gizmo money on a set of Ohlins

My thoughts too - basic bike and as cheap as they'll offer it to me

Heated Grips and Chrome Exhaust (I love a bit of polishing) for me, probably spoked wheels too

I can testify that the standard suspension on the basic model is pretty darn good - no need to waste your money on unreliable Ohlins

A crud catcher can be made from woven stainless steel mesh (1mm wire 5mm pitch) for under £10 including longer bolts and edge trims. Its not as pretty as a laser cut CAD design but gives time for the farkles to come through and protects just as well.

How soon have you seen the weather out there. There's more grit out there than a very gritty thing with grit on it?

Well the quicker you get yours the quicker I get my very sexy belly pan and possible crash bars, Do you think you could mod your extending plate for the back seat that opens out ( for the wc)

I figure the bike will be on its side at some point, especially as I'm new to the GS and used to riding purely on road, I have this so I can tackle longer tours and seek out the further flung places. As such, I'll be trying to find gnarlier stuff I wouldn't tackle on my other bikes.

I had no idea what to spec being a newbie so I've gone for protection from Touratech, the satnav as the integration makes it worthwhile and I like loud so an Akra is on order. My bike is the TE so it doesn't need a lot. About 80% of the orders are TE so most of us like the toys.

My existing soft luggage will do for now, I'd like the BMW luggage but it's a lot and I will see how I get on. I had no idea that there must be some sort of patent as it looks like Touratech needs a frame fitted whereas the BMW stuff clips straight to the existing mount points - am I right about this? A dumb question maybe but makes a difference to my choices as I'd prefer not to have fitting hardware in place 24x7.

I've no idea where to put the tax disk of course so a photo on my iPhone will do and I'll leave it somewhere safe.

Oh, and I've put on a private plate I had on retention that was on a car previously so that can never be off a bike now.

What is the rule? If it goes on a bike does it have to stay on a bike. I have two plates that were bought direct from DVLA, have been on bikes and are now on retention. Can they never go back on a car?

The engine bars are the BMW standard ones, S/S Electro polished, all the bolts and spacers are S/S also, they cost me £254-00

I had the varios on my last bike, I did like them for the same reason as you, When you unclipped them there was no unnecessary scaffolding. A few guys like the extra protection from the frame work of the metal panniers etc, I did think the varios were a bit too heavy even when empty and they weren't solid enough on the bike when giving it the beans IMO . But somebody made a bar that went between them to stiffen them up. I would have bought one but ended up trading it in for this one, Will I put the new varios on the new one ? Probably.....but not if there is no discount on them when I'm paying that much for the bike.
