2013 GSW 10 klm Blown Gearbox & Engine. Seized back wheel.

Don't know about yours, but every LC engine I've heard, including mine, makes nothing but funny noises?

How much warning will you get when the clutch nut comes loose?? :nenau

Speaking from experience and upon review of both my forward and rear facing cams & mic's I can tell you that as soon as it happens you will know, the engine makes a slight clattering sound clearly coming from the front of the engine. Not sure how much damage has been done by this point though. The sound it makes is not however particularly loud and it does not make you want to shut it down asap.

It is a confusing time, I was not even sure the sounds were coming from my bike. By the time I pulled into the cafe stop my clutch was fairly ineffective so I stalled at low speed. The bike was put into N and pushed, then you could hear a whine coming from the drive train and feel some grinding. After the bike was towed and everything cooled down the back wheel was firmly seized.

13 GSW warranty update.

Just under 3 weeks ago my 13 GSW had a clutch nut loosen and wreck the engine and gearbox. The bike had 9600 klm and was 15 months old.

Within a few days of dropping it at the dealers, BMW authorised a new engine and gearbox but I had to wait few weeks to see what else they were going to offer. About 2 weeks later I was offered the following:

New engine & gearbox, bike ODO to stay at 9600 Klm
Free 1st and second scheduled services
New front tyre and pads
2 year extended warranty from the end of the 1st 2 year warranty date

Ok, so I was pretty happy with this until I found out that the free service and 2 year warranty extension were not transferable to the next buyer. I rejected this deal.

Next offer was for a BMW & Dealer subsidised trade-in on a new bike. After 15 months of use I was expecting to contribute something which I have agreed to. The dealer will also transfer all of my options over in the deal and there are a lot of SW Motech farkles fitted.

So sometime late next week I will pickup a new 14 GSW which makes the whole process about a 1 month turnaround. Whilst the time delays were a big hassle I would have to say that BMW Australia and the dealer Procycles in St Peters have treated me fairly well and presented me with reasonable options.

I will be hopefully be getting a GSAP fitted so at least it will feel like a new bike, lol.

EDIT : I changed my order from the 14 GS to the new 15 GS in Arctic White & black engine/frame with GSAP (AU$600) & Keyless Ignition (AU$345) & an extra year warranty (AU$600). Production scheduled for next week with anticipated delivery in late October or early November. I sure hope that Fritz on the production line has learned how to properly torque down a clutch nut by now.

They got rid of Fritz, and Hans, Albrecht and Pieter as well........their places were taken by four Turks, Eenie, Meenie, Minie and Mohammed.

The drop in build quality that happened to coincide with this is, of course, entirely coincidental :)

Call me stoooopid but doesn't one use a tab washer to stop a nut coming undone? - my old 70s Beeza did.

with the advancement in thread locking compounds , locking washers are (maybe sadly) a thing of the past.

banging the washers' tabs with a hammer and chisel : too time consuming and cannot be mechanised in a production line scenario.

.

No tab washer in this picture

I think the nut in question is the one holding the shaft in place. At least that is how is was explained to me by my mechanic. Maybe should have a pin or a tab hammered over or whatever for a nut holding 250 NM of torque.

Voz - can you confirm whether you actually saw the nut loose?

From an engineering point of view, that is shockingly shit and destined for failure.

Its a very large nut torqued to 180 ft lbs with threadlock. There are a lot of cars with timing belts set up the same way on the master pulley. Would you care to further explain your POV?

I recall that a run of S1000RR engines had to be recalled , opened up and their big end con-rod bearing cap tightened down to spec because there was an error with the settings on the machine that was doing the job on the production line.

a couple of bikes had their engines explode in dramatic fashion as the rod let go.

Yes it is, the dealer tech showed me the shaft moving around. I did not see the nu but imagine it is the one in the second image with the washer.

While I was having a service done on the 1200 I saw a S1000RR spread all over the workshop for this recall it was not a quick fix

The image shows the use of some heat to release the tread lock I wonder if the clutch been is in a constant bath of hot oil has the same effect on the thread lock as the heat gun?
