Morning All.
This mechanical numpty is just after a little advice before I go down to my local "service centre"
I have an 09 GS and hence is still just within its warranty period.
For the last couple of weeks I have noticed a quiet but constant grinding sound, most probably emminating from my rear. I thought - when I have some time I will go down and have a chat to the guys at BuMW. Yesterday, though a little foggy I decided a ride to work was in order, and though the roads were a little damp I began to noticed that the bike didn't feel as stable in corners as usual. I put that down to old square tyres and a sleepy rider. But on the way back from work along some of my favorite Sussex roads I noticed that the problem was still there and probably slightly worse. I am very much Captian Cautious when I ride.
Anyhow, once unpacked in the garage I was giving the bike a once over and noticed that the rear wheel had a couple of millimeters of side movement. Thought it must be a loose wheel nut since I have never taken the wheel off. But all were tight as, and the movement is still there.

Right - before I go down to BuMW can anyone give me some advice on what could possibly be wrong. Is it a bearing somewhere? Please don't say FD. Any help would be most appreciated.
Regards to all
Dean

Thanks Merv,
Did a little search last night, and FD seemed to be the common denominator.
Oh well of the "service centre" I go.

That is a Good Point

That is Bad Why would you continue to ride around while your bike is making a grinding sound???

Go To Dealers and get it checked ASAP if a bearing fails you could be dumped on your ass on the road

And Don't go riding it around any more until you do! If it's grinding something is rubbing on something else and you will only make it worse

Tks again

Thanks Jaythro,
At first I thought it was probably just the brakes sticking a little as it had just come out of hybernation. And I could only just notice it when I rode with my ear plugs out. I also thought the noise and the ride might of been possibly the squared tyres. But a bit of research quickly proved me wrong. As I said I am most definitely Captian Cautious and the noise is bearly audible.
But my ride yesterday alerted me that all did not feel well, and that it wasn't just my novice riding skills.
The "service centre" is only a couple of miles away and I am just about to saddle up, and I will heed your advice.

Thanks for taking the time to reply back.

Cheers

Does your rear caliper go in and out at the same time as your wobbly wheel ?
There were a batch of badly machined mounting plates :D

Deffo final drive bearing thingy. Had that before myself. Although yours does sound like its in a rather sorry state.

Its not safe to ride mate.

Ring up BMW Assist and get them to recover it to the dealer. They'll do this without any arguments.

Where is that sticky

Yep - you guys were right. Took it down to my local and following a bit of a jiggle, a sharp intake of breath, and a tut tut, the technical progonosis was yet another f**ked FD. Evidently these sealed units are made of butter !!!. He is going to put on a 2011 FD which he believes is a 100% improvement on the older sealed unit.
Oh well - have left the bike in his capable hands.

Once again - thanks for all your advice on this matter.

Cheers

Tks Marki

I am but a parrot in these things and this is what I was told.
And I definitely purchased this bike in 09.
But this is what senior honcho said. Must follow this up on Monday.

Appreciate the time in helping me out on this.

Cheers

I was more hinting at the fact that the 2011 FD isn't any better than the 2009 as suggested by your stealer. It has a breather on it which will really only help seals from blowing but could also let water in if you go deep enough in a river say. Other than that nothing would really appear to have changed internally
