Well, went like this: called in today to report that my left info switch is sticking and was told that there is a recall to replace right hand side as well.
Sort of a recall in that they planned to do it at the next service, ...... but doesnt' seem like they were to contact me till nearer the time.
I don't know full details but sounds like they will replace the lot :nenau

Switches failing, left and right is a common problem. BMW really do need to fix this, it has been a problem for far too long - they need to read the riot act to their supplier.

Why do you blame suppliers?

What about design functionality, component supply to spec, assembly????.......call yourself an ENGINEER!!!!!

Had my starter switch fail in Austria this year, when I got to Villach to get it replaced, the dealer, Motodrom had a fair few box's of them on the shelf ready to go. I remember the service guy commenting that "this cheap Chinese crap causes him many problems".

New switchgear on my GS TE has been fine (so far) though.

Calm down dear..... It is the quality of the components and the assembly of the units that is the problem in my opinion - I think that C&K are the switch element manufacturers, I used to use C&K toggle switches donkeys years ago and they were always a bit fragile - they are ok for indoor use but too delicate for outdoor automotive stuff.

Its the GS too. Right hand side kill switch is subject to a recall on mine, feb 2014 build. No great shakes, half an hour while you wait.

I had my left side switches replaces 3x on my 13 GSW. I consider myself fortunate that I have nearly completed 2 weeks of 15 GS ownership without a switch failure.....yet.

Had my right switchgear replaced when I had tyres replaced on my '14 GS recently. I must say I've had no issues with switchgear... yet!

What do they do with the one's they take off?
I'm after a hazard warning light switch button (just the red button bit)

Look luv.......blame and certainty is very Engineer.

The supplier either makes something to the customers specification or makes something and the customer is satisfied with that specification.

Bmw can easy change the spec or change supplier.

Too many functions in such a small switch body, I prefer the chunky switches of the late 90s which can be taken apart and cleaned, problem is all the modes, traction control, esa etc would need a separate control location.

IIRC the Stelvio I owned had one 3-position switch and all of the functions were in the dash, leaving the handlebars much cleaner - just the usual horn, indicator, high-beam, starter and kill switch. It was a bit of a faff to get used to the menu but ionce I worked out what was going on (forget the manual!) it was a breeze. I find the heated grips button on the GS awkward to use on the move, and as others have said, the indicator can be a stretch if you have the GPS wheel.

FWIW, there was a thread on advrider with comparison pics that claimed BMW had redesigned the switches to be more durable. This shows in the fiche as a changeover since august 2013. Not sure how long it would take to use up the old stock and fully change over in the assembly line. Does anyone who has had recent problems know for sure if you have one of the new design clusters?

This is a symptom of capitalism with beanies running companies! As much profit as possible at the lowest possible cost. It is not exclusive to BMW, it is rife!

Just popped out to the garage and all the original switchgear on my 1982 suzuki is still working fine

Built down to a very high price using the cheapest components they can get away with to maximise profit margins
