2014 RT's GROUNDED! DO NOT RIDE!

A loan bike, car or full refund - I am struggling to think why any reasonable person would complain about that.

P.S. over 16,000 miles on my 2013 GS and it is lovely :D

Well there's the rub. Me, I'm caught right in the middle of this mess. Back in April I had a couple of eye opening test rides on the new RT. Fell in love with the little beauty and ordered an all singing all dancing example. Got a great deal from Rainbow for my 2010 30th anniversary GSA and started to plan 6000 miles of summer tours with my old mate. Sold of all my GS bits and bobs, including sat nav, on the forum here. Two weeks before collection all this crap kicks off and my RT is grounded in Germany. So "TJ" what the feck you going to offer me? No nothing, I've still got my bike. What about my cancelled trips? Yeah thought so!

Where did six months come from - I'll tell you - Two months product redesign and manufacture, at least 2 months testing and development, then two months production and distribution! I can see why Rainbow have mentioned to AHaywood that all RT's mighty being sent back to Germany. Crush and start again!

Did you say that you still have your bike?

Perhaps because on what is a very expensive bike ALL of the development work should be done BEFORE it is released to the general public and this kind of action should not be required in the first place.
Yes bmw did not build the shocks but they signed off on them and their testing

A different scenario might be "All the components were tested, approved & signed off. What was delivered by the third-party supplier for the production bikes was not 100% as per spec."
I am not saying that is the case, but it would be a very plausible scenario.

I hope that the fix is not reliant on the outcome of a "whos fault is it" drawn out legal case or that the solution to the problem for the the manufacturer of the part isnt to go into liquidation. There will be a huge sum of money involved here for BMW or as i suspect someone else further down the food chain and regardless of the compensation etc etc the damage to long term business could be devastating. I do believe that Sachs make the tricky suspension for Ducati and others so for them where will this end

If only the shock unit needs to be swapped out, why would there be the need to ship bikes back to the Fatherland?
Also, assuming the rumour about the problem shocks having been built using substandard materials has basis (I have no clue), why would there be any need for major redesign etc?

So what part of I don't know what's going on did you not understand? Bigdave, you still have your current bike so why have you cancelled your trips?

The agreement to buy the bike is between you & your supplying dealer so you are right as I am going to do nothing for you as you're not one of my customers.

I am looking after my own customers which I have done via loan bikes, brand new R 1200 GSTE's with luggage etc.
Some of my customers also have foreign trips organised & I have arranged alternative transport so they can still go on holiday. This includes 2 customers who were due to collect their new bikes this month but haven't been able to do so, as well as the ones who have already taken delivery of them. This is what I do for my customers. If they incur charges changing insurance from their own bikes, I pay it.

You have ordered the bike from Rainbow so there is your first port of call.

There will be information coming next week but if any dealers have told you what might be happening, it's unconfirmed. 6 months to fix it, 9 months to fix it, "crush" them in Germany! Where do you come up with it?

You have trusted BMW Motorrad dealers in the past otherwise you wouldn't be riding their bikes. So, rather than sitting on this forum & getting yourselves & other owners/forum members worked up, get in touch with your local dealer & see what can be done to help in your situation.

Please all of you, be patient & if you do want to have a go, do some homework first.

If you would all like to carry on with this thread then so be it, I will bow out now as my intention was not to upset you guys, but to try to let you see things from a different perspective.

Good luck with your local dealers, I have known most of the dealer network for many years & know that they will do whatever they can to help if you give them the chance.

Good luck with your endeavours, holidays & here's to as painless a fix as possible.

TJ, not "TJ"

Oh I hope not as that will put and end to all the speculation that most (non affected) members love to pour out onto these pages, so what would we have to read then?

It happens - been there done that :D

Lol, TJ, welcome to 2014 and the modern social network age. Glad to see you finally subscribed you tight arse! lol - joke.

As i said in my post i'm stuck in the middle. Mind set to ride the best touring bike ever 6000 miles around Europe. I have no intention or incentive to do the the trips on my GSA. Just me, that's why I'm stuck in the middle. I spoke with my dealer today and as always - Sorry Dave no news.

Oh and fair dues for Baldestones and BMW sponsoring the site.

I thought I might start a bit of "fun" with my initial post.

My real point though isn't about the dealers - it looks to me like they are generally making a good fist (in some cases a very good fist) of a very difficult situation.

What really amazes me is the fact that the only thing that seems to be reliable about a new BMW model nowadays is the fact that it will have more problems than almost any other make. There is no way they would ever dare to introduce such ill-tested models in their car business, so why do they persist in doing it with their bikes?

I seem to remember the new CEO of BMW Motorrad admitting that their build-quality was unacceptable and committing himself to restoring past standards. Apparently he still has a way to go...

I don't work for BMW, nor would I want to, but am struggling to understand the problem here.:nenau

If you have a new RT, and aren't happy with the offering of a loan bike/ compensation, get a refund.

If you have a new RT on order, and aren't happy, cancel your order.

If you don't own a new LC RT, fuck off, and mind your own business.:D

Lets get real here folks.

Out of 438 RT owners in the UK it seems less than 30 have rejected their bikes and asked for refund, the rest are more than happy to have a replacement bike till a fix is announced.

Some sense at last to quell the hysterics :)

When sh*t happens... I went to speak to my dealer today about the 'RT issue', they hope that there will be some more customer information from BMW next week. I have not needed a loan bike as I have a lovely old R1100R to use. Sod's law, within 10 minutes of leaving the dealer today, and with a trip to Skye planned for next week, I was knocked off my bike by some clown in a 4x4 who ran into the back of me whilst I was stationary at a road junction. I now have no bikes to ride. I'm hugely grateful to my dealer who came to my rescue with a van, and then ran me home on the back of an electric scooter. Many thanks Motorrad Central. I hope the RT problem can be resolved ASAP.

Pleased for your outcome and no injuries. I had a BT Openreach van reverse into my GS at a junction (went backwards instead of forwards - then drove off!) and BMW were just great.

What has suprised me is how many new GS loner bikes have suddenly become available at the dealers. I thought there was a 6 week wait for delivery? I've not heard of anyone having their order delayed. It would appear that the delivery waiting time is artificially engineered to psychologically increases the desirability. Nutty would know how that works.

yes but they are gs models that the dealers are putting on as loan bikes, unless they are using their own gsa demonstrators

Yeah I understood you didn't work for BMW as all your time was taken up working in Bashar al-Assad diplomatic department...............
