I've ordered myelf an LED headlight from the bay and I've just tried to fit it.

When the ignition is turned on, the surround LED bulb (red line) doesn't light, but once the engine is running, the main beam lights, and the high beam works fine but the dash shows a LAMP warning....

Has anyone else had any success with these LED units or have I bought a baddun' ?

I've a fairly similar unit - would need to wait till I'm down at the bike to check if exact - it's worked pretty much perfectly, no lamp warning (but mine is an older bike, 2010 model). Some slight fogging in the glass on very wet days, I ended up drilling a hole in the underside so it burns out when run. I'll check also, but i think minimal comes on with ignition on, then main when engine on. Very happy with it, loads better than the stock.

I've been touch with the seller and he's sending me a replacement, hopefully I just got a bad one, it happens.

Bit late to the party, I had one on my f800gsa and it was the mk2 version (where they got rid of the condensation problem), never had any issues regarding reliability and the sidelight portion illuminated as soon as the ignition was switched on , it never threw up any fault codes so you probably had a duff one

I've just tested the suspect LED unit off the bike with a 12v leisure battery and frustratingly the individual LEDs work properly 🤔

I know the cabling and connections are good on the bike as the OEM headlight works fine.

on mine , ignition on engine not running led sidelight illuminated , engine running dipped then full beam, looks like the unit supplied is faulty when wired up to the bike 20201027_165324.jpg20201027_165338.jpg20201027_165348.jpgunning dipped ty

Sounds like it's a canbus compatibility issue then. I would have thought the adaption tech would have been built in to the retro-fit unit.

The seller has sent a new unit to me and it arrived this morning but I've not had a chance to test fit it yet due to a storm. Hopefully I'll get it tested in the next day or so.

As the wind had died down a bit I fitted the replacement headlight unit to my bike and it's got the same issue. Both work fine off the bike, but not when connected to it. I've contacted the seller to arrange the return and refund.

It was 4 years ago I bought the headlight via E Bay and made sure it was a European based seller ( pre full brexit customs issues ) with simple returns if there was any issues led headlight.webp

CAN-bus has nothing to do with the issue. That's a popular misconception. The ZFE manages chassis electrics.
OK, So what is you take? - something is shutting down the DRL, fed from the running/side light wire. My thinking was that the draw of the DRL might be greater than the system expected to see, so is shut down for protection. Whilst this might have just puffed a fuse historically, the advent of canbus & various controllers changed all that.

Obviously the Headlight is the opposite scenario, drawing way less current than the old halogen bulb, so it throws a bulb failure.

When I was shopping for LED headlights for our two bikes I came across various comments where people experienced issues with that headlight. I opted for the "3rd GEN" headlight instead as it had consistently positive reviews and you could actually obtain the E24 paperwork for it.

Get the one that has the sidelight that looks like parentheses. Available from multiple sources.

Thanks, I've found a seller of the headlight you recommend so I'll give them a try. 🤞

Ahh, didn't realise it was a known issue! Might source a newer version when a bit more flush. Thanks for the tip.

I got one of these and it worked first time, no problems or instrument cluster warnings, so much brighter than the original 👌

Thanks for the advice @RadioFlyer 👍
