2016 GSA LC - Frame Rust - repair?

Not just BMW - they are virtually all guilty - a crying shame. Literally one thin top coat direct to bare metal on most bike frames. A total joke. At least a basic zinc primer would help a ton but they simply don't want to.

All you can do is Dinitrol the insides as much as possible, clean fully and XCP it from new and rinse/wash/re-apply and fight a battle that nature (and the road salters) will always win eventually.

When I had my Rt all the Tupperware hid the corrosion, at that time the Honda st1100 also had a bad reputation for hiding corrosion under the plastic with an added bonus they would rot the exhausts, expensive ! and BMW owners would gripe about discolouration to the headers

Had the rusty rear sub frame on my 2018 GSA TB TE done under warranty at Oceans in Plymouth. The new version came in a very fetching dark grey.

On my 2008 GSA I have had to keep on top of things corrosion wise, rubbing down and repainting areas of slight corrosion as they occur. I guess the WC models are no different, shiny modern water based paint finishes seem less long-term durable than old school paint was.

I would strip and powder coat that rear subframe and retouch the bad front frame areas by hand with rust killer then some black enamel and a fine brush.

Thank you, that seems to be the way to go. However, what about the insides of the frame? How do I treat that? Any thoughts on that?

My 2016 , is exactly the same.

Daily use, washed as required.

If and might get a freshen up at some time

its the whole frame, so no chance of dropping the subframe lol

Its 6 years old btw , corrosion warranty is 2 years, ;)

Ah! that is the info I was looking for. Will still try Oxford BMW as they have been really good with my requests. May have a solution to this.

Can I just make this clear. My comment (post #2) was a bit of humour. A joke. But of piss taking.
Oh well. HNY Tossers

That is an interesting bit of information, though I suspect, it may be just within the warranty window period.

As noted, Dinitrol. Or Waxoyl but as with ACF, XCP and Dinitrol is superior.

Ah! thank you. Apologies, missed that in your earlier post.

I am forming a plan to
a) remove the rear frame and powder coat - that should also take care of the insides.
b) the front end - remove all tupperware and paint outside. Inside - use Dinitrol.

This is all - if Oxford BMW are unable to help.

Thank you everyone. :beerjug:

I’m not sure the powder coat will migrate inside tubes but I wouldn’t worry. Rustproofing solution will normally neutralise and stop further worsening. Clean it as much as possible, get it blasted and P. coated. Then squirt it up every frame hole with a good dose of warmed up Dinitrol and turn the frame every which way to distribute it.

Thank you. That is an option and the guys at Oxford have been very good so far with everything to do with servicing.

Dave, that looks really good. Is it only the rear subframe that you did or did you also have to do the front frame?

I have rust on the front frame as well (below pic, frame section next to the right front fork).

Has you bike ever had the fork recall done? as I can't see the collars BMW fitted to strengthen the legs in your photo in Post #4

Should look like this :thumby:

Yes, they have been done. Got them done within the first few months of that recall note :thumb2

Bollocks, been biking for 40 years and have 5 bikes all maintained the same my 2016 GSA subframe and pivot had to be replaced twice within a year! BMW paint is pish!

Taken from Tenere700 forum

“I have a Tenere 700 Rally edition from 2021 (Made in France). I got it in June 2021 (4 months of riding), has 4000km on the clock, has been ridden mostly on-road (70%) but only in dry weather. I keep it clean, lubed up where it has to be, all in all I’d call myself a good owner.
Since I am as finicky as I am, I did a pre winterization inspection and found rust/corrosion on most of the frame welds. Pictures are bellow.
I called up the dealership and the authorized service shop. They said it would be a shame to disassemble the whole bike to respray the frame, as it is very hard to assemble it back in factory quality. They suggested painting over the rust with a brush and OG paint but thats not the right way to do it. Rust will still spread if not removed.
What do you think? Does anyone else have a similar issue?
I’ll keep you updated…”

not just BMW with crap paint , ok it’s about 1/2 the price of a gsa.

In the late 80’s I bought a used K100RT from a dealer that was a year out of warranty. The frame was rusty, I complained and BMW UK paid 50% of the cost of stripping the bike and the full cost of repainting which I thought was pretty good. Also demonstrates it’s not a new problem.

This isn't mine however my mates BMW 1200GS LC 2014 is in my garage for me to clean whilst my 1150 GSA is away having surgery.

The whole bike is a rusty mess and I would never have bought it!!

I have cleaned and polished the turd and have spent 30 hrs on it making it look pretty good. As part of this the rear subframe was removed ( 45mins) and sent off for Powder coating and zinc treatment? £60 Anyway it returned today looking new. Tomorrow it will be refitted. Will make all the difference.:)

Wow! That really looks good.

Is there rust on the main frame as well? How are you planning to clean that?

Also, whereabout did you get that powder coating done?

Yeah, planning for quite some time to get things in order with the frame.

I think he took it somewhere in Birmingham but I'd have to ask him when I see him.

The front frame is bad but I've treated what I can see with Jelonite? rust stopper using two art brushes taped together followed by a coat of smooth hammerite and when dry some ACF50. It will do. It's not my bike but it's significantly better. I think it had spent it's life parked on a beach!!!

Thank you for the recommendation on the Jelonite + smooth hammerite. :thumb2 Looks good and specialist stuff.

Any pics of the front frame after work done please - if not a bother. Ta. :thumb

Shocking how bad these rust.

I'm on my 6th 1200/1250 GS since 2005 and not one has ever had a rusty sub-frame

Same here, Lost count of my GS's since 2000, one for 14 years ! Never ever had any rust on any of them.

Edit : And Id bet all of them had / have more miles on them than these rusted ones.
