Does any one have the inside track on KTM's 2016 models? I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a 690 Enduro but have read the Duke is getting a more powerful engine (up 7pct to 74bhp :green gri) for 2016. If they're going to drop this motor in the enduro and give it a few tweeks then it's probably worth waiting for. Hopfully they'll be a bit more info at the shows but I'm getting impatient :D

The 690 is already fast enough so I wouldn't worry about it.

Fair comment but I'm going to buy a new bike I want to have the latest model, it'd annoy me buying a bike now if there was a revised verson just around the corner

Never buy the first examples of anything, the last examples of the previous incarnation are the most developed and best of the type. If in doubt look at any of the LC threads :D

It would be great if they fixed ...

The need to pray to what ever deity you believe in that the FI warning light will go out every time you start it
The shite front forks, with the addition of ABS you cannot swap these for EXC forks as the ABS / Speedo is an all in one sensor
Rims made out of chocolate

This said it does make you grin like an idiot when it's running ....

Alan Cathcart in MSL current issue rode the prototype, slightly more powerful BUT vibe free

I've got friends who have love / hate relationships with them so I know what I'm getting my self in for! My last big enduro was a X challenge and I spent a small fortune sorting out the shortcomings, I did consider having another but I've been there and I really fancy a 690.

Me too, but now i'm stuck

I fancy a 690R, but £7800 (list, there maybe some discount) is a fair wedge considering all the things you need to do, to make them trailworthy

Mirrors
Bashplate
Fuel filter
Fuel cap swap for RR one
Seat
Suspension, perhaps
Fuel tank bolts

and probably a whole host of other stuff

Plus the rocker bearings need careful checking frequently:blast

I was looking at a new one last night on the showroom floor and the steering lock is pitiful - you get about 25 degrees, before hitting the lockstops

I really must go and check one out.

I tried one a couple of weeks back, amazing machine makes a GS feel antique but way too big for my next trip hence the 690

It is a lot of money but I think any new machine requres a certain amount of farkling before it's set up how you want it

There is this one on here at the moment.

True, but like the XChallenge, these bikes do seem to need an extraordinary amount of aftermarket 'basic' fettling

I guess it's because the chassis and engine is from the SMC and was never 'concepted' as a dirt bike, from the outset, sadly

It just 'morphed' into one, hence the need for some basic fettling before you address screen/seat/fuel storage

Mines a 2009 which I've had from new. I fitted a metal bash plate and rox risers when I first had it but nothing else has been changed. It's now on 25k kms. with probably less than 2k on tarmac and I've not had any real issues.

If you're looking for a full on enduro there are better bikes, someone said the forks aren't great which is true, the steering lock can be a nuisance. A wide ratio gearbox is available if you want to go to those lengths. The dirtstar rims may not be as tough as Excel rims but are fine for normal use. The RR tank bolts are probably a good idea. The rocker problem was resolved back in 2011.

Folding mirrors are a good idea on any off roader.

I wouldn't have one with ABS unnecessary complication.

Mirrors ..........................................Does any bike come with folding mirrors?
Baseplate.......................................Comes with a plastic bashplate. Do any other bikes come with a substantial one?
Fuel filter ...................................... Recommended but not crucial but for £40 and a bit of time?
Fuel cap swap for RR one ................ Only needed if riding in lots of mud.
Seat.............................................. A necessary change in my opinion. Costly options unfortunately with Renazco and seat concepts.
Suspension, perhaps........................Depends on your riding but does help but only if you are into fast off roading.
Fuel tank bolts ...............................Uppers not required if you fit side pannier racks but for £27? Lowers do need changing due to a design fault but again £20

Rockers seem to have been sorted. On my 2008 model I changed them at 22,000 miles. Seemed to have been a dodgy batch produced meaning a worldwide recall of dealer spares last year. Main years affected seem to be 2012 - 2013 models although odd others have been found. Easy to check and change though.

Steering lock is not a problem 99% of the time and you soon get used to it. It only becomes a problem if you let it.

I have changed the rear brake pedal on mine as they do bend really easy as they don't bend back well. Expensive but necessary £144.

To me not a great deal to do compared to a lot of other bikes.
