2018 KTM 790 Adventure

I’ve been waiting to see the 790 for quite a while and on paper looked like the perfect next bike for me, even sold my 1190R in preparation, fast forward to today at the dealers. WTF were KTM thinking with the lower tanks other than low centre of gravity, that is one ugly looking bike, they have lost me on this model, I couldn’t own this bike, sorry to all you new owners I can only think you are all blinded by the “must have the new model” syndrome. I love KTM as a brand, I’ve had 11 of them on the trot and still got 2 in the garage, but this won’t be one of them. Might have to do a Nutty and get a 1290 instead.
Only my opinion, for what it’s worth :nenau

Was the other way round first not sure but seen it in the flesh think it looks mint but at the end of the day I wanted a lighter, thinner, smaller bike with great fuel range that is getting rave reviews think ive found it:thumby:

@Trekker3: Guy de Maupassant was one of the many Parisians who hated the Eiffel Tower and often ate lunch in the restaurant at its base, because it was only there that he could avoid seeing its otherwise unavoidable profile. Taking a page from his book, if you are riding the wonderful 790 creation, you won't have to worry about what it looks like. Concentrate on the postitives—tubeless tyres, 470 km fuel range, 40+kg lighter than other so called midrange bikes. It is in a class of its own!

I know KTM make dynamic riding bikes but ownership for me is not just how it rides, it has to look right, I have to be proud to own it, this bike is not for me simple as that. I’ll wait for the Yam T7 and if that turns out to be a parts bin special then I’ll not buy that either. I reckon that KTM will be discounting the 790 before the end of the year because it won’t be as bigger success as it could have been, time will tell.

I found it very small, probably a reaction to people moaning about adv bikes being too tall, but me and the Mrs ruled it out for lack of leg room, but we are both 6 foot with long legs (34").

I would love one as a weekend toy, or even for a bit of commuting, but then gripe No. 2 kicks in, if I wanted one right now it would cost the same as I just paid for my 1290S!

IF they end up with a warehouse full of the things come December I might be tempted at the right price, but "right price" means silly price that I cannot pass up.

Is there a bike that looks 'right' for everyone? I doubt it.

When the first baboon butt headlight came out I HATED it. But now I actually like the look. I'd prefer a Ducati front end of course, but they're made by Italians not Austrian's.

I have to say I don't love the non-R model, but I think that's mostly down to the screen on it. The R however... Different story. I think it looks ace. It looks like what it is though. You mustn't forget that it's a 'go most places' bike and guys like you seem to want Italian supermodel looks - that's unrealistic. The more you get under the skin of KTM's the more realise how clever their design engineers must be.

You do know that the T7 has been doing the rounds of all the shows since last year ? If you’re disappointed with the 790 then the T7 will be even worse.

I really like the look of the 790R-much better looking in my opinion than the 1290R and I’ve had both.

The 790R will also be much more usable for me.

Hope you find the bike you’re looking for.

+1 , the Yamaha looked cheap and a bit half finished at the NEC compared to the KTM. A guy I’ve ridden with a few times had put his name down on one with his local Yamaha dealer and was excited about getting it , until he had a good look at the show . Went home and “cancelled” his place in the queue.

I'm sure you don't mean to be offensive chap. Unless you're right and all us "must have new modellers" are a little stupid??

First proper road ride today.

As Arsey has said - a very flickable agile bike. True that. The impression is that 90% of the bikes weight is 1" off the floor. It's not, but the sensation is sensational.

Difficult to compare the 790R to any other bike. I would say it's unique. And fabulous. And deceptively fast. What a brilliant engine and I'm disappointed I haven't tried a Duke 790 before this. I bet they're a riot! So much power in such a lightweight naked must be pretty hilarious, if uncomfortable.

I discovered Rally mode. Careful with that one!! It's...hmmm....lively. Yes, let's say that. And all the better for it in my book. A proper KTM.

I'm still not sure it'll replace the 1290S. Time will tell. A larger and heavier bike will nearly always be more comfortable for long distances. And the 1290 engine entertains on a different level. I would argue that a 1090R would do both 1290/790 jobs reasonably well, but would at the same time fail in the attempt to be as good as either. By some margin. So for now at least the 790 looks like being a keeper.

Sounds like I need to blag a test ride............but I'm scared to..........I love my 1190R so much.............

Andres

No harm in loving your current bike. In fact it's a real shame if anyone hates their current bike. But a test ride is always nice. They might be upset if you get it filthy, but not doing that means you miss half the point of this bike.

Yeah, but, if I like it (which I know I will) I’ll end up wanting to trade my current squeeze for the younger model.......not a bad choice to have to make though I guess :)
