2018 KTM 790 Adventure

Just filled my bike up for the second time-so I knew it was full when I reset the trip the first time.
Anyway, I filled up at 225 miles on the trip as gauge was giving low fuel warning.
I put in 16.7 litres meaning there was 3.3 left. That works out at exactly 60mpg so it would have been 270 miles to empty.

That’s on Guernsey roads and from previous experience I’d expect to get at least another 5mpg when away in UK/Europe.

So,pretty much as I expected, it’s going to be 290/300 to empty so a good 260/270 usable range before you need to start looking for fuel.

The best bit is that after you have filled up, you may have added 16 ish kgs of weight but it’s carried so low that you’d never know ! Try that on your GSA 1250,which is more like riding with a 24kgs suitcase balance on your legs when full.

Not sure about 1250 sales but I feel a little sorry for the new 850 ADV. Why would you buy one after trying a 790R? On the up-side, you'll be able to find an 850 in a showroom near you!

Someone fucked up at bmw with that one which is a shame it’s a cracking engine in the wrong bike

There’s talks of them doing a smaller capacity XR with that engine.

Won't be long before the other manufacturers copy the low slung fuel idea will it?

35/31 litre panniers-width 92cm
40/36 is 98cm
45/41 is 104cm.

Xtremada’s will be narrower, especially when empty as they pack in quite tight.
I've just measured my 690R with 38/31 litre Metal Mules and they are 93cm wide. The Bumot equivalent of 35/31 is probably larger capacity when you take the toolbox into account. Although the 790 has storage either side and under the seat it would be handy to have the extra toolbox space still available even though you've dropped the panniers off for some fun.

I'd be interested in whether the Bumot panniers are flush inside and how they are fastened onto the hoops.

Oh, and the Metal Mule hoops are the same 245x350mm size as Touratech so it might be possible to hang the MM panniers onto KTM's 790 frames. I will see if I can find out the widths of the KTM/Touratech panniers when fitted on the 790, and the width of the frame so I can work out how wide the MM panniers would be on KTM frames.

The pannier question for me is whether that exhaust can be modified to pull in from the outside of the bike. If it can then I suspect some custom frames and soft panniers will get my vote. Aim would be to get the pannier setup no wider than the bars but that's probably not realistic.

Thanks very much for the video. Looks a quality bit of kit.

There was some talk of this elsewhere and you can't bring the frames in too much, otherwise you can't remove the side covers to access the twin storage compartments.

So you compare the 790 with the adventure version of the F850GS. Perhaps you should compare the standard GS as it has the same fuel capacity as the 790?

How do you work that out ?

The 790 has a 20 litre tank. The GS850 only has a 15 litre tank whereas the GSA850 has a 23 litre tank so the 790 tank size is closer to GSA than GS

It's a thought but I wouldn't be too fussed about the plastic storage bits if I had narrow pannier setup/frames. I'll check that out though. Thanks.

This new Krate fits perfectly on the 790 rack.
Love Giant Loop.
