2018 KTM 790 Adventure

Is it as tall as you're old 1290

Not much in it .

I had two piece Ergo on 1290 set on high setting and the 790 is a tad lower on its fixed setting so I would say it’s about the same as standard seat on 1290 on high setting .

It’s a tall bike !

Only rode 10 miles and had g/f on the back . It felt VERY light compared to 1290 and even to my old 950SE, even two-up !
I think it’s the low fuel tank giving a low c of g.

Fuelling is better than 790 Duke . Gearing very similar . Heated grips work but are not integrated :

Need to adjust gear shift as was set a bit high and I wasn’t wearing big boots .

Quick shifter seems same as on Duke.

Very flickable on Rally STRs, even with damp roads and taking it steady to save getting dig in ribs !!

Tight squeeze in garage

Bit surprised to see the AT in there. Do you see a clear difference in their use ?

Curious you’d change the steering damper. The reviews I’ve said say it isn’t Scott but perfectly adequate. Why tyre change, you going for more of a road tyre ?

The journalist is very complimentary about the handling, ergonomics, power delivery. That should settle any concerns as to whether the non-R version is good for off-tarmac (I was riding the hamada he was on just a couple of weeks ago on my 690R).

I met this guy at the Milan bike show. He's HUGE!! Well over 6ft. 6/2 or 6/3 I reckon. So if he says it fits him with the low seat height I'm actually quite surprised.

So....I rode again today, and again two-up. The bike feels much lighter than the 1290,even with a pillion.
So when I went for a quick spin solo,it was a revelation.
Did a few short tracks -we don’t have many here and it was so easy to control. The KTM after-market pegs are very stable but I’m going to get some bar risers as I’m 6’1” and could do with the bars a tad higher when standing up.

The bike feels much faster than the 790 Duke, even though it can’t be .The fuelling is much better though.
The riding position is spot on and the firm seat is just right, again that’s a personal thing.

For me,and its my opinion , but having only ridden 40 miles, its in a different league to the 1290R.So much more flickable.Feels much nicer in most scenarios.

Obviously the 1290 will kill it in outright acceleration but that’s not what I’m looking for in this kind of bike. One of the reasons I bought the ATAS.

Less is definitely more, not that Nutty will ever get it !!
