2020 KTM 1290 Superduke vs 2019 1250 GS-HP

SteveC10...The tires were virtually brand new as in 700 miles on them Bridgestone S22 so tires were obviously not the problem. They were properly inflated too...Like I said the bike was the problem.Very twitchy around he steering head and still slow steering going faster than 60 mph...The engine made great power for a twin (as compared to a S1000RR it is still 30 hp down) between 7 and 10000 rpm where it abruptly gets caught by the rev limiter like getting hooked by a metal cable on a aircraft carrier (it desperately needs another 1000 rpm overrev-reserve) but in gears 1,2,3 it can't put the power down W.F.O. because it won't go as fast forward as the front will come up despite it's not too good electronics...If wheelies are your forte it is good but if you want to go fast on back-roads where you have a lot of turns or want to win a quarter mile race it is definitely NOT ready to race...Sorry KTM-gurlz wearing orange skirts...You have to be brave because the truth hurts...:D
And yes the M1300GS will come as BMW trademarked the name...17" wheels and 170 hp...yeah baby :thumby:

I thought we'd established the facts days ago... You are more comfortable on the GS because it's easier to ride. The KTM was simply too much bike for you

The KTM is all motor no bike...Too much motor for the bike...On the other hand a S1000R (the naked RR) is just as fast as the SuperDuke R in a straight line but can put the power down and is much more stable in turns and sterrs much quicker too...On a track a RR would made mince-meat out of a SDR because it has an additional 30hp it can put to good use...So much for too much bike...:D Just try one for yourself and hold that throttle W.F.O. all the way to 10000rpm in the first 4 gears...If you have the balls you know what I mean and probly come to the same conclusion that the 1250GS is the faster bike on twisty roads...:thumb2
On paper the KTM is faster though...;)

Ok.
I'll go and buy one in Spring and report back. Looking forward to the experience.

Dear mr Boxerlost I have a GS now but I used to have a RT before and the RT has smaller wheels and you can get them in a very nice silver colour that looks very distinguished Have you thought of buying a Rt because it has small wheels and also it is very good in a straight line not like the ktm
You guys make me laugh call someone a nobody or mediocre while not knowing who you talk too...Obviously you are not very experienced and or fast otherwise you would not make such clueless comments...Of course if you just want to go fast in a straight line a GS won't be a fast bike...But the art is in cornering. Here the GS excels and even more so if the roads don't have perfect pavement.I just was blown away how shit as in unstable the KTM was...:DEven in a straight line it could not use it's power...That's all.And now dream on "Reday to Race:...LOL More like Ready to Crash...My bet stands...I'll beat all you clueless losers on my on paper inferior GS...:D
The only bike faster than a GS on backroads was the R1100S...This bike was on rails no matter how hard you rode it and what you threw at it and no matter how bad the pavement...Only in a straight line the 1280SDR would beat it userwise the orange wonder would not have a chance even if Mc Williams was sitting behind the bar...
A R1250R would easily beat the KTM as long as there were more turns than straights...The ugly truth about reality and the power of advertising...:D
I had no clue myself until I got to throw my leg over one and try to run it as hard as my GS...ballistic top-end for a twin for sure. But what's the point if it does go more upwards than forward ? The rest was utter shit...:thumb
And no cry or take a shit fanboys or just a fucking hike...:D
Or get a clue that even the best rider is faster on a bike that is stable and actually puts the power down than bucks like a wild horse...Reality and percived reality are two worlds !
B.t.w. I love you Stick...:aidan

Stanley do it...Buy one in spring and sell it in summer like the poor chap did trading the 2020 SDR with 700 miles on it for a R Nine T he than traded a few days later on a R1250R...:D And I thought a get me one of these Ready to Race KTM's SuperdooperDuke R's basically brand new for 5000 off and thanks to a test-ride did not end up with a still way too expensive turd...;)
Like I said before...A real interesting experience riding that thing and another reason never to trust the media that only spews LIES,propaganda and mis-information no matter where...You can only trust your own instincts and experiences...Even the lections are fake & rigged as we could see this week and Boris small Johnson will reverse Brexit... Remember you read it first on UKGSER where you can get the Truth from some forum members...:thumb

@ Dave Andrews...I hear you brother:thumb2
I would buy a RT over a RS because it is sportier with Telelever !
But for Kalifornia or Mexico the wrong bike with the big fairing, too hot.Good for England and colder climates though with great all weather protection.I'm pretty happy with my 1250GS-HP now after I have switched the spokes for the BMW cast wheels. But I thing with 17" wheels and 170 hp it would be even better :thumby:
Even Arsey seems to agree...:thumb

Mick , Thanks for posting this !
A few comments...The guy riding the bikes is not very fast and the track has long straights. The KTM is on Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 while the BMW on Michelin Panakee Adventures...;) Jogging vs Hiking shoes.
Having said that on a track you make time in fast sections ! Long straights were the KTM puts down the additional 20 hp (155 vs 136 hp on the same dyno) translates to 232 vs 209 km/h Vmax. That is why the KTM beats the BMW on this track. The quick shifter is not a problem for me either because I never use it...:D Heavier crankshaft and heavier driveshaft makes it harder than lighter crank and chain to make smoother actions on the blipper. It works perfect and much smoother on a S1000XR,R,RR than any KTM.And yes the BMW needs 170hp and 17" wheels to be as capable on the track as it already is on the street and to keep up with the KTM on longer straights !
And also the 2020 SDR has another 30 hp (184 on the same dyno) over the 1290 Superadventure as also a completely different frame as also 17 vs 19 front wheel...So the 1290SDR or 1290SADV are 2 completely different animals...

Even with the Scorpion Trail tyres (which are shit) and a 19” front wheel, the KTM spanked the 1250 round that track. The GS is easier to ride fast, which is perfect for you, as you can’t handle anything with any more power (your words ;)).

Not to mention of course that the ADVs is considerably slower than the SDR and handles like a barge in comparison

Sounds like a classic case of deflection to me. He’s obviously been traumatised by something recently and is just lashing out aimlessly :D

Each to their own but I’ll throw my opinion in. I’ve owned multiple KTM’s and Ducati’s but never an SDR.before the GS I owned a Super Duke GT then a 1290 SAS. During that time I’ve ridden both the Mk1 and Mk2 SDR’s but not the latest incarnation covering close to a thousand miles on various SDR’s. Demo bikes and swapping with mates.

I’m a new convert to the GS and it took a while to get accustomed to it but I’m happy now after 5,000 miles. Put me on a GS or an SDR and I reckon I’d be quicker on the SDR. No question it’s lively, it’s so small and light unlike the barge like GS, only my personal feeling.

Today I had a chance to ride a almost new (less than 1000 miles) EU-5 1290 Superduke my local dealer traded in by a guy who had bought too much motorcycle...He traded it on a R Nine T...Anyways on paper the Superduke is way superior to the 1250 GS being 40 kilos lighter and having 40 hp more...I was really excited to put it to the test to see what the so called "Beast" that is "Ready to Race" is all about :thumb2 Anyways took it on a twisty back road I know well to see how it compares to my stock 1250GS with ADV "sports" suspension and BMW cast wheels in stock 19" front & 17" rear sizes.
The 2020 Superduke 1290 was stock except for a Arrow pipe.My GS has a Akrapovic EU-3 pipe.Tires on the KTM are the sports Bridgestone 22 while I run Continental Trail Atack 3 on my GS...Anyways the KTM is actually pretty comfortable and the sound is pretty quiet even with the aftermarket pipe.Nothing wrong with the brakes either (Brembo Stylema) but the engine needs 4000 rpm to pick up cleanly while the GS thanks to shift-cam picks up cleanly 2000 rpm earlier ! Roll-on thanks to 140NM they feel about as evenly powerful up to 8000 rpm but between 7000 and 10000 rpm (where the rev limiter puts an end to it abruptly) the KTM feels almost superbike powerful ! The GS needs 30-40 hp more to be the perfect motorcycle engine for the street without losing the low-rpm tract-ability ! But anyways the KTM is only a one trick pony...In 3rd and 4th gear hitting 7000 rpm it will wheely. It has too much power for it's own good and can't put the power down in fast forward progress like an over-sized dirt-bike for the steet. This can be either exciting or scary depending how who look at it but definitely not fast on road or track.Power is nothing without control.Be it either too short wheelbase or too much torque a S1000R is just as fast but much easier to ride and thus faster on track or back roads.Even the GS that is 40 kilos heavier and 40 hp short on power is much easier to ride and faster than a 1290 Superduke on twisty backroads...:thumby: I can't imagine what an M1300GS would do with a 17" front wheel and a 170 hp boxer....:thumb2
The KTM is definitely not ready to race as I have never ridden a motorcycle that was so twitchy around the steering head and still steered slower than a GS at speeds above 50 mph...Good top end power for a twin (the fun starts at 7000 and is abruptly over at 10000 rpm) but no control...It will wheely and is very unstable in the twisties...What a let-down and another interesting motorcycling experience.Lot of power wasted on a unstable moto-cross chassis...The magazines definitely don't have a clue but I know now why 1290 Superdukes are so easy to pass on trackdays...:D
Not on the straights but the GS is much faster in the twisties...And with bags,centerstand,shaft-drive and Telelever much more practical...:thumby: All we need know is 30 more hp on top !!!
Hopefully BMW is listening and doesn't waste their time & resources on junk like the R 18...;)

Fucking Americans. You'd have thought that something only good in a straight line would suit them.

NuttyDuke...The romanian guy is obviously a guy that relies on the THROTTLE as he is slow in turns.I get my pegs down on the street while he is miles away on the track...Also Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2 are "sport-tires" compared to Michelin Panakee Adventures on the GS...On a track like this with long streets even I would have been probably a little faster on the KTM because it is hard to overcome 15 mph higher speed on long straight lines in a few turns...Yes the GS needs more hp ! Nothing a M130GS with 170 hp and 17" wheels to be able to run really good street rubber could not fix...:thumby: Even Arsey agrees...:D
And a 2020 SDR and 2019 SADV are completely different animals with completely different frames and different engine tune where the SDR makes 29 hp more than the SADV above 7000 rpm....Obviously the SADV is stable and able to put the power down but way slower steering than the GS...But I can imagine it would have been faster than the SADV seeing 150 mph max and getting down to 2 min a lap while our romanian racer on his private S1000RR does 1 min 45 sec on a bike that is really ready to race being able to put anothre 30 hp on top of the 184 of the 1290SDR to good use...:thumb2
Everything is relative but origionally I was talking about that a "barge" like a GS is faster on twisty roads than a on paper superior 2020 1290 SDR !
17" wheels and 170 hp for the GS....:D
I leave it at that...;)

I asked a friend who is an ex TT racer and instructor at the Ron Haslam Race School, which bike he’d be fastest on as he’s ridden them both on road and track. He said the KTM.

The man's obviously a fool!
