2021 1290S

The new rads look slightly less vulnerable by not being direcly in line with front tyre all the time, and the angle may help deflect anything thrown at them?

Would still fit guards every time, for what they cost compared to the aggro / expense if you do get a holed radiator.

First Recall

..........and I haven't even got the bike yet :blast

RECALL OF KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S AND KTM 1290 SUPER
ADVENTURE R MODEL YEAR 2021: REPLACEMENT OF ACTIVATED
CHARCOAL CANISTER SYSTEM PLUG
Valid for all markets
KTM recalls KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S and KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE R models of
model year 2021 to the workshops of authorized KTM dealers in order to replace the activated
charcoal canister system plug.
In extreme conditions it is possible that the plug of the activated charcoal canister drainage hose can be
damaged by heat from the exhaust system. For this reason, the existing plug must be replaced by the
new aluminum version.
Customers to whom the affected motorcycles have already been delivered are informed by a personal
letter and are asked to immediately contact an authorized KTM dealer to arrange an appointment for
replacement.
The replacement can be carried out by authorized KTM dealers only. This replacement of the
activated charcoal canister system plug is a free-of-charge service for customers performed under
warranty.

Touch and go whether they will be able to get the recall done on Friday when I am due to pick up the bike as they cannot register the bike before the work is done and parts due to arrive sometime Friday!

Still only First World problems :augie

As above ......... there is a red recall on the new KTM 1290 super adventure S and R. It applies to the venting pipe for the vapour extraction on the fuel tank. KTM in their wisdom fitted a plastic plug in the end of this particular rubber pipe and then left dangling within centimetres of the front header pipe. I’ve done 1200 miles on mine so far and the plastic plug has started to melt.

My bike was in for a new radiator and they were realuctant to give it me back without the recall work being done. In the end I signed a disclaimer to get it back and I decided to tie it up with a cable tie to prevent it melting anymore as I have a few miles to do this weekend. I will take it in for the exchange plug to be inserted next week.

Assume it is this pipe which is just plugged at the end?

In which case you could just take out the plastic plug and put in a suitable sized bolt and reuse the existing clip - what a palaver over nothing :blast

.........and yes a silly place for KTM to route it in the first place!

UK bikes don’t have this canister do not an issue.

Wrong - fitted from around 2017 and so definitely an issue ;)

Any idea where it is? The photos I’ve seen, from markets where they are required, show the canister under the rear seat, there’s no canister under the rear seat of my 21 SAS.

No idea as I have not got my 2021 one yet - hopefully later today :D

My 2017 1290 SAS definitely had one under the seat before I removed it to make room for the tool kit ;)

So finally picked up my new 1290 SAS today with the dealer having managed to do the recall enabling the bike to be registered :D

Went for the KTM plastic luggage as dealer did me a deal on them and Holan are not doing frames for the new bike which will fit my old style Nomada boxes :blast

Now just waiting for the high Ergo seat to arrive and have ordered a set of "R" radiator guards.

So far I have found that:

The Givi top box adopter kit does not fit on the new bike - holes in the wrong location.
SW Motech Ht adjustable footpegs fit but in the lowest position foul the new style side stand.
KTM branded SW Motech quick release tank bag - should be able to make it fit but not sure it will look right so may go for the later one.

Plan to get a few miles on it tomorrow and then look at sorting out sat nav and scottoiler on Sunday.

Sorry to see the old one go:

But happy so far with the new one :)

Boxes look nicer than old ones, shame about Holans, I was hoping if I upgraded I could just buy new rails for mine.

Be interested to know the overall width of the boxes when fitted, the ones that came with my 1090 were bloody wide and did not hold much, the exhaust side was pathetic, the Holans (31/37 combo) definitely take more and are about a foot each side narrower.

Have you found the cannister yet, and is there much space under seat, when I tested new one I did think with lower seat position has the room under the seat been reduced.

Hi Rasher - KTM quote a width of 1.01m for the plastic panniers and a total capacity of 70 litres so about 25 mm wider each side than my old Holan set up which I can live with.

Holan confirmed that they are only doing the new "INNOV PRO QR" pannier frames for the new bike and that my old panniers would not fit these. Helpfully suggested that I sell my old system and buy a complete new set of luggage from them :augie

Not found the charcoal canister yet but no longer under the pillion seat where I have managed to squeeze in the KTM tool kit and a puncture repair kit :)

Other thing that will not fit off the old bike is the wind screen which has the bottom holes in different locations so something else to sell at some point having a Puig sports screen and a Givi touring screen. Just as well the screen on the new bike works well for me and so will not need replacing ;)

My charcoal canister is under the passenger seat! Just tucked over on the left side do gives a bit more room under the seat than the pre 2021 model.

I now have experienced the dreaded seat dropping syndrome ! Really bloody annoying as initially it wasn’t doing it but now does it all the time! Anyone know if there is an official mod coming from KTM? I know I can bodge it but want a proper fix from KTM.

There is definitely something under the pillion seat but certain it is not the charcoal canister - look at the front of the engine high up between the 2 radiators behind a little guard - it is there;)

Looks like this https://www.trevorpopemotorcycles.c...(EU)&section=2&groupname=EVAPORATIVE CANISTER

Done 180 miles on mine now and not suffered from the seat drop yet - not sure if it was fixed on later ones like mine.

Got the Sat Nav sorted today - as mentioned by Apex previously accessory outlets are under the right hand tank panel - fortunetely body work not that difficult to remove and replace so long and you take your time over it :)

....and a nice easy run for the wiring under the cockpit trim

and another lease of life for the old Nav 5 :thumb

For Rasher some photos of the KTM luggage:

Luggage looks OK, 1.01M is a slight improvement on width, the 2017 luggage that came with our 1090 measured 104CM, or 1.04M.

Still a fair bit wider than my Holans which measure 92cm and have pretty much the same capacity, but if they don't directly swap with new rails then I think I would just flog them and see what the options are at the time I am looking to buy, probably another couple of years for me.

Panniers/ Seat bag?

SEE you went to JUDD i am struggling looking at a seat bag that gos on pillion seat as i don't carry passengers rear pegs removed. I was just thinking the panniers may be overkill. And not sure id get on with side openers having always had spam tins on GSA and GS etc . Are the boxes readily available then? I may ask for a price ? Is there any other fittings to buy? I have the KTM Top box fitted. What is the pannier bag you have in the n/s pannier.
Bike looks good loving mine im 3k in

Hi Derek
Yes got mine from Judd - Ray/Ben did me a deal on my old one that I was happy with.
Panniers are now available as they managed to get me a set ;)
You need both the panniers and the side rails so adds up to about £975 plus fitting but got a big discount on that :D
Pannier bag is a Hollan one I had already - just trying for size.

Why not just use a big roll bag/dry bag across the back seat and a couple of straps?

When you say side rails ? can you show me pictures please? panniers off. also re roll up bag ive look dat them but it just like a big sack when you open it and you have to ferret through everything i was looking at a kuryakin bag but after all the messing about i may just buy panniers what inner bags do u use? and what discount should i push for. ?
