Hopefully going to Bill Smiths, Chester today.
But it’s not smaller . For instance the wheelbase is longer .
The mudguards are metal as is the tank, headlight unit , rear rack , front crash bar racks etc .
The 701 is pretty much all plastic apart from the motor, frame, bar and wheels .
The weight disappears as soon as you ride off . Pretty academic anyway as they are built for different market segments, plus the 701 costs nearly twice as much and you’d need to spend another £1.5k on it to undertake long trips like you can on the 450
The 690/701 is definitely aimed at a different market sector to the Himalayan although the 450 may close the gap a little.
Not sure why you need to spend so much on them to make them suitable for long trips - I just used a Giant Loop and fitted a satnav mount and it was fine, maybe a better seat and a couple of litres of spare fuel would be good.
Is that really the tubeless version ?NicePicked mine up today, only running in and not revved passed 5k but getting 85mpg. Lovely bike it is a joy to ride with plush suspension and good brakes. Anyone going for heated grips might get away with 130mm as i think theyve fitted 120mm and there are some large gaps to the switchgear.

Just for you TIJOkay, having looked at this - thought I’d share my opinion for anyone that cares?! lol
First off, I really like the direction RE are heading with this……..complete opposite direction from most other manufacturers. This is a simple motorbike without all the frills that other manufacturers put on their bikes to justify the outrageous prices and differentiate them from the other like minded companies. This really has no genuine competition for the price. It also fits almost everyone (including the tall like myself). The fact that it’s slightly heavy doesn’t bother me either - actually makes it feel quite planted. The guy in the shop bitched about the side stand, but I prefer to the perpendicular ones on many other bikes. Centre stand nice touch too. Really nice simple bike without the unnecessary excesses!!
If I lived in India, Thailand or Indonesia this 100% would be the bike for me. I mention this cause I’m strongly considering Goa or Bali as a place to live 9 months of the year. Sick of the UK and really don’t have the appetite for a labour government. My fixed income will go much further in more basic surroundings.
However, for the UK (particularly where I live) I feel it’s just a little underpowered for some of our roads. And I don’t mean wringing another 10hp out of the motor (which I’m sure they could do). Think it needs more power and torque across the board - that you’d only get from a bigger motor………like a 650cc single. Just my opinion.
I’ve not seen the black and gold everyone raves about, but I actually like the plain Jane one (pictured).
This is the kinda bike you could literally ride everywhere and not bother about the odd scuff. I paid too much for my GSA to be bombing about the dirt roads in Morocco with it. Know a bunch of you rich boys don’t mind paying £25k for a bike and then throwing it in a mud hole………but not me!
This is the one for that![]()
I’m quite heavy (around 16 stone) and just found it slightly toothless. I’m sure I’d get used to though………so point takenI’m not sure why you think it needs more power ? How heavy are you ?
It’ll do around a ton and out accelerate most cars out there . What is it you need it to do that you feel it can’t ?
Yeah, it’s nice.Just for you TIJ

Don’t get me wrong, I do like the bike overall and the value is unquestionable. Just not sure where it’ll fit into my life here (literally! lol). I’ve already got 3 bikes in my garage and would never part with my Harley or GSA to make spaceI’m planning on taking mine to the Picos in September then back home via the autoroutes .It’ll sit at 80 mph all day .
What colour you get?I’m planning on taking mine to the Picos in September then back home via the autoroutes .It’ll sit at 80 mph all day .

Doubt I’d buy much - maybe the rally seat for off road. I love the minimalist design. Dry bag on rack would be it for me. Maybe small SW Motech tank bag. Less is more when travelling. Definitely not metal boxes - would look like a bastard step child of my GSA!!Not got it yet . Getting Hanle Black Tubeless.
Cheap farkles from India in garage ready to fit.
