22 April - SE Meet-up - The Alma, Wandsworth

The useless TfL app is saying that the way to go is via Bank to Waterloo on ‘The. Drain’. Their own website says ‘The Drain’ will be closed with no service.

I can walk to Waterloo and take a train or perhaps catch a Thames river boat thing from Tower to St Mary’s Wandsworth and walk for 15 minutes.

Either way, I plan on being there by 18:30 GWWP.

TfL have confirmed that the London Overground (Windrush Line) is running normally.

This is great news, as I can go straight from Wapping to either:

A. Clapham Junction and then walk for about a mile, or

B. Clapham Junction, then take a train to Wandsworth Town and walk for a couple of minutes

See you at The Alma at 18:30

Roger that.

I will be there a little earlier.

Table size now adjusted to recognise the current GSer ebb and flow of numbers!

Remind me about Gedinne when we meet, please.
Oooh yes, the opportunity to go to that hasn't been dismissed out of hand by SWMBO and the family holiday now looks like being the 4th to the 11th ish August in Switzerland.

I reckon I might be able to sneak a bit of the classic bike racing in after all

Apologies for I have just seen this thread…

Unfortunately due to location of the venue, and the fact that I am only just about to set off home from work, you lot will be all but half pissed by the time I rock up, having traveled an hour and fourth minute trundle from home (including g 30 minute walk to the station) to that is Wandsworth. Not least as I’ve landed from Tokyo just over 24h ago and feeling not exactly as one should for this time of day. Frankly knackered.

God willing, I will be seeing your joyous faces next time round. Enjoy your evening chaps.

well that's me wrapped up in finsbury.... what a day, it does work but I have worked out why it's broken....

now I just need to figure out how to fix it for tomorrow morning... DOH..!

And then there was three, but finally two, plus a guest.

The Other Paul G and Wapping, braved strikes and other terrors to make it to The Alma, where we met up with Jim, a friend of Paul’s who lives locally. Jim, is a ‘good bloke’, a new owner of a Guzzi and a racing Renault Clio, which will be in action this weekend in Spa.

can't remember when i last went in a pub that had so many people in it .

Paul and I both commented that, if you run a good pub, people will use it. The Alma, has a long history of being a ‘good pub’. Its most striking feature is its large central, three sided bar. It’s a great design as (provided there are enough bar staff) more people can be served simultaneously. The restaurant at the back is efficient and the food reasonably priced. The only oddity, which might only be noticed by someone from London, is that (as a Young’s pub) they had no ‘Special’ available. This meant that a ‘Mix’ was off the menu. What’s a ‘Mix’, you might ask? It’s a pint, made up of 50% Young’s ‘Ordinary’ and 50% Young’s ‘Special’.

That aside, a great evening. I even got to see Paul’s ‘digital diary’, a thing of wonder! Plans for Gedinne were settled on and I got to hear about tuk-tuk racing in Sri Lanka…. What can go wrong?

PS If anyone is thinking of coming to London for a short break, the pub has rooms upstairs. It might make a good base, not least as it’s right outside Wandsworth Town railway station with its regular trains to Clapham Junction and into Waterloo. Have a look at the Young’s website and also the Fuller’s brewery website, as they too have ‘hotel pubs’. You could do worse.

PPS You were right, Paul

I'm still in Finsbury Circus..... this job isn't totally going to plan, but `i have got 50% of it to work.... sadly not the 50% I needed to have working this morning...

isn't a mix a brown and bitter..?

And a fine old chat it was too.

Baldrick, sorry to have missed you. I referred Jim the Greek (new Norge owner) to you, he's not sensitive so will make a good client!
