24000 mile service

It's not a case of put up or shut up its about having a view and an opinion which I'm entitled to give , surely if the price of oils and consumable are realistically price they would surely get more business

I personally support the dealers by buying clothing and helmets at premium prices

Great- you support the dealers and then have a go about the service costs.Yes your intitled to your opinion but I think its very one sided one. Look at the bigger picture as Micky's pointed out to you. Bike parts are expensive what ever the manufacturer. They're simple not made in the same quantities as car stuff. I'll agree some stuff is expensive its not the dealers fault.Their mark up will be a lot less than you think. The services you have had on your car seem expensive by comparison as you've pointed out. Try shopping around for bike servicing. The labour rate is the variable. Get your bike serviced in the winter -its usually cheaper.

George White, Carnell's & Motorcycle City all tried to stack 'em high & sell 'em cheap. RIP

I didn''t think £280 for an MOT & 12000 mile sevice which included shaft, brake & gearbox fluid changes was too bad at all.
Also provided was a 12 plate loan bike with insurance FOC.
I also got a call the next day to ask if everything was ok. :thumb

My previous 1200 came with no history & was fettled by a local bike shop & the bills were much the same.

I know money takes on a whole new value when entering any main dealer car or bike, but it does also when watching the petrol pump whizzing at eye blurring speed ..... and that really is theft!

No one is saying put up or shut but Skywalker and Micky are presenting the facts. I ran a truck dealership once and we had the same complaints from customers that they could buy parts and oils etc cheaper elsewhere. We knew they could but unfortunately a dealer gets no choice where he sources most of his service kits and believe me, the mark up barely covers dealer costs. You are not being ripped off at all but you are paying for your work to be done by the manufacturer.

When I had my bike serviced at a dealer, I would ask for a discount and generally got an acceptable bill considering the work was done by the BMW.

The dealers have to buy your 'consumables' from BMW GmBH, they are not free range. They are told what oil they may use ... and where to get it from. They cannot sell after market brake pads (not that I'd fit them anyway)

Yes, you have a view and an opinion, and you're entitled to give it, but you aren't even entertaining the thought that there might be another view. The brain is like a parachute ... it works best when open :)

I fully understand what you are saying and I appreciate the dealers contractual obligations but I still think its over priced obviously you don't, I will use a none franchises service provider who will provide an acceptable service to me for £200 cheaper

Well it might be acceptable to you, and it might or might not be acceptable to me. Do you want 'acceptable' service? I personally want something more than merely 'acceptable' :nenau

There's actually one or two threads running on UKGSer at the mo that could be pulled together here .... brake pads for instance. People moan about the cost of OE pads mmmmmm yup, not cheap. But with 72,000+ miles on the F800GS the original pads (and discs) were still well serviceable .... now THAT's value for money :D

Its a bit like taking your dog to the vet's for it's booster ...... You know it's a bit of a con BUT they will still be there when you really need their help! :thumb

No main dealer means no BMW, which means no bike to take to your independant.

fair comment, you pays your money and you takes your choice

even more so if you by the same pads elsewhere for half the price, which was my point, i can also assume that BMW dont pay the £30 you and I can get them for, so the mark up is frankly a joke, i believe 15-20% is normal in most motor parts being sold on, but if they get them for £20 pair they are doubling the price and then some :yikes

What you are not getting here is that mark up (whatever it is) is not all profit. Most of that goes into the running costs of the dealership with only a small percentage held by the parts department as profit.

As part of his dealership contract, the dealer will have to buy and fit manufacturers approved parts at a price set by them and you may be surprised how much that is

service

I've just had a full major service on a 2 year old German car and paid £350, I just can't believe £475 is value for money. Last year I paid £300 for a 18k service this year £475 that's nearly £800 in 2 years for run of the mill servicing

To put BMW bike servcing into context I`ve just paid £400 for 5years / 50k miles servicing for my new 5 series..:thumb2..............now why don`t they do this on thier bikes apart from the fact they would charge at least £1000...........:eek:

Shinyface;)

As previous, you clearly missed it .... cars are business, bike's are leisure :rob

Ps .... well said Sgt B :thumb

:beerjug:

If you want expensive servicing, just buy a KTM.990 Adventure: £570 every 8000 miles plus £250 every 8000 miles (alternating 4000 mile services).

If I do the maths, that works out to be an average of £615 every 6000 miles

Oh and 33mpg and 4000 miles (if you're gentle) from a rear tyre.

ker-ching ker-ching

(awesome bike though!!!!)

I think the GS is one of the better bikes in terms of servicing costs. Mine's getting its 24000 tomorrow from SBW BMW, for £369

(but no brake fluid change as that was (or should have been, but I personally wouldn't bet on it) done as part of the Approved BMW thingy by the dealer selling to me last June).

as they say, theres always someone worse off

i had a chat with a guy at work with a new Ducati, apparently they have extended the service intervals and lowered some parts prices to get away from the complaints on high price servicing, he reckons cheaper to look after than BMWs now
if he convinces me the bikes are relaible as well maybe next time I change the bike I may think the un thinkable and go Italian! (mind you the exploding Guzzi engine a few years back does taint my view still)

Guzzi improved considerably when Piaggio bought the brand. I though seriously about a late model Stelvio, but they are still "me too" bikes so bought a GS.

Ducatis are very powerful but highly strung engines cant make for good reliability.?

Any vehicle is reliable if only used to visit a cafe on a sunny sunday afternoon during the summer.

I had a mirror offer from VW - Glad I declined as in 2 years it has done 30k and had 1 service which cost £107 ;)
