I went looking an e-bay for a 256 Mb data card for my SP3 earlier, but there were none advertised in the UK. However there was a link to at least 7 cards advertised on the German e-bay site - perhaps not surprisingly, these were cheaper than the ones I've seen advertised on the UK site. These are produced by Garmin, so I'm assuming they will be compatible with my SP3 - unless anyone from here knows better. My German is non existant, so I can't tell from the descriptions whether they would work or not. Any comments etc would be welcome, before I bid on anything and possibly make a tit of myself. :P

It says that they are not produced by Garmin!

Thoght you had a 2610 Cameron:confused:

I have a 128mb none Garmin made data card, it seems to work just as well as the real thing. It fits fine in the card slot, and you pull it out by a short fabric tab. It cost £40 of eBay America.

Too late - already made a tit of myself. :P You're right Greg - the description read "Garmin Speicherkarte 256 MB für Streetpilot III, 276C .." but looking at the photo closely, it does not say Garmin on the box. Told you my German was non-existant.

Rob. No, went for the SP3 which seems more than capable of doing what I need - although the standard 128Mb card will not hold all the maps I will need in a few months. Apart from ebbo, does anyone else have experience of "aftermarket" cards? If there is any doubt about them, I will just walk away and go for a genuine Garmin card - rather than a clone. The problem I have, is that I have a 1 week solo trip to Northern Germany pending and will be relying 95% on the GPS. The last thing I want to find is that a cheaper card doesn't work 100% in the middle of Berlin for example. I assume they will be ok - but I would rather hear from some more who have had direct experience of using them.

In my ignorance I am getting confused so pardon me if I state my understanding and put me right when I err.

For the 276c the memory cards are proprietary Garmin of 128 and 256mb capacities. I do not know if clones are available or how to distinguish the correct type from a generic CF card which can be had upto 8Gb, or so I believe. Are the Garmin cards formatted or is the connection proprietary or both or more?

For the 2610 a generic CF card maybe used, I have seen mention of having a 2Gb card installed.

All enlightenment welcome and credit to Wraithwrider who responded earlier.

Garmin do a range of cards starting at around 8mb to the newly released 256mb. Only the 128/256mb cards would likely be of use to most of us now.

There is a copy card made probably somewhere in China available in 64/128/256mb sizes.

I got in touch with a German supplier who sent me this mail in response to my enquiry.

As their is some interest in Garmin cards, take a look at this link

I did some research; sent him some mails (but got no response) It seems these quite expensive Garmin cards are no more than cheap flash memory.

Common sense took over in the end and I bought the Auto nav kit with a 256mb card :)
