Received my disc from Garmin for the map updates for my 2610.

I noticed that the disc cover says updates for streetpilot 2620/2660 but assumed all was OK as they know my unit and sent me the disc.

Anyway, all updated on the lapatop and paid my money for the unlock code, I did manage to perform a download to the unit but right at the end it said it had a problem communicating with the device. I retried and got this message 'You are about to erase map data that was pre-programmed by Garmin. If your GPS uses removable data cards, we recommend that you NOT continue, as the preprogrammed data will be permanently lost.' etc. etc.

The card in there has no maps on it following this and I get the same error trying to download older V8 maps now. It doesn't even try to build a map set.

I tried another card with old maps on it and the unit works fine but I don't want to try and load onto that card from the new version.

Could it just be a knackered card? I think the disc from Garmin is OK because the disc itself does not mention the unit at all just the software.

What's happened, I haven't a clue????

It does sound like a problem with your card. The 2610 units were not shipped with pre-programmed cards. If there is no data on the card you started with, try reformatting it in a card reader, that may also report an error.

Did you try loading the entire map set ? That comes to more than 2GB which the 2610 cannot handle.

It's only my small 256mb card, the one that came with it.

Nothing to format it with unfortunately.

I tried loading about 150mb of maps so should be OK.

256  Mine came with 128 Mb card . I replaced that with a 2GB straight away.

If yo have tried another card and it was working fine then it does seem to point to there being a problem with the card. It may not have been noticeable untik the fault party of the card was erased then had data written to it. IIWY I woul stock with the card that does work.

I haven't tried to download maps to the other card, because I didn't want to ruin them both.

The fact that I couldn't download any version of mapping to the card seemed to point to a card failure to me.

I assume the mapping disc from Garmin is the same for both the 2610 & 2620?

Knackered card, managed to get it working OK with my other card.

2gb card ordered as a relacement:thumb
