Took my bike out today for a ride to test the sat nav (street pilot 2610). Problem I found with it was it kept cutting out then back in again straight away. It seems to do it under hard acceleration!

Its wired to the negative side of the battery and the positive has been taken from the rear brake light. The connector at the back of the sat nav is ok, so is there any reason why it would do this?

Also, what's to stop me hard wiring it directly to the positive side of the battery?

Mines been wired to the positive side of the battery for 3 years nearly, is there an issue with doing this :augie:augie:augie

I've had a similar thing but it was the connector at the rear of the unit that was not seated properly :thumb2

I didn't know if there would be any issues with wiring it directly to the positive side or not, that's really why I asked. If you've had yours wired this way for three years then I guess its not an issue.

The connector at the back of the sat nav is fine, not at all loose.

Its mounted on a ram mount off the handlebars. I have read that vibrations can cause the unit to shut off then restart. Is this right?

Also, when the unit is not in use on the bike, where's the best place to stash the wiring for the sat nav without it getting in the way or tangled with other wiring?

I'm thinking of getting a Migsel month for the speedo and wondered how other people have run the wiring in to the unit when mounted this way, and, what do you do with the wiring when the units not in use?

I think I see the problem

Errrm........... if the positive is wired to the brake light then wouldn't it go off when you stop braking :P

no - apparently its wired to the "always on side". I didn't run the wire in, it was done by the previous owner and it has been done in such a way that the unit powers on and off with the ignition. It comes on ok as it should, it just keeps cutting out and re-booting quite a lot and it seems to be when I accelerate.

I read a post on here that mentioned something similar and they put it down to vibrations - would vibration make the unit cut out?

The vibration issue affected the next model, the 2620 due to a change from cards to internal hard drive. That said I have a 2620 and it hasn't suffered at all yet, so yours should be ok in that respect. Is it the power that's cutting out or just the voice prompts? The Garmin audio connector on these models is notoriously bad and some have found a small plastic washer on the jack plug helps, or just change the plug all together.

Also, if your power connection to the lights is sound, try cleaning the copper connects at the back of the unit and on the plug, then smearing vaseline on them. Sounds like you have one of those simple problems that are annoyingly difficult to trace!

It is the power that's cutting out as when I ride along I can see the unit keep re-booting.

I think I'm going to re-wire the positive directly to the battery and while there re-check all the connections and re-solder the joins. I'll try cleaning the connection at the back of the unit and put some vaseline on it and see what happens.

I have run the wiring for the 2610 under the tank - there isn't anything there that would cause a power loss, is there? I've been careful not to snag the wires on anything and there is play in the wiring so its not caught on anything.

They should be fine under the tank. Cable-tying it along the way is good. Definitely sounds like there's a breakage somewhere along the line, the 2610 is one of the more favoured sat-nav's for it's robust reliability. Do you have an in-line fuse? I'd give that and it's holder a check too.
