Used my new 2610 this morning to head into town ( For new tyres at Essential rubber in Dalston). I knew where i was going so did not bother using the unit as i route finder though. When i got to the Walthamstow area of the A406 and then down the A12 the screen had some areas that appeared to not have any maps available. Just blanks.

Is this normal? load the maps again?

It is operating on V8 with the upgrades from the garmin site.

If you are using a 2620 with the Atlantic basemap, the screen should not go blank even if you don't have the correct detailed maps loaded.

If you have a US basemap, then it may well go blank if you either:

  • move away from an area covered by a detailed map, or
  • zoom out the map past the 5 mile(?) scale

If you didn't buy the unit new, check the basemap. Easiest way to do this is to remove the CF card, then fire up the unit and zoom into London and New York. The city that gives the best details indicates which basemap you have. (There are also Australian and South African basemap versions, but these tend to be less common in the UK).

If you have the Atlantic version, reload the v8 maps and try again. Make sure that you don't miss any key map tiles.

Cheers Greg,

Bought the unit (2610) new over here and as far as i am aware i have the Atlantic Base maps. Will check though. Will compare with Larry next time he's in work.

If you bought it from an authorised Garmin dealer, it will have the Atlantic basemap.

If it went blank, it might have to go to the menders.

Definately from an authorised dealer. Will check it out again en-route to work Wed.

When you say it "went blank", do you mean it went white, with very feint diagonal yellow lines? If so, it just looks like you didn't download that particular mapset. Will have a closer look at mine when I get home though.

These things seem pretty bomb proof, so the chances are its something pretty simple. :thumb

Yep thats a better description white area with slight lines across.

Have just whipped out the CF card as suggested by Greg, and yes it is the Atlantic base.

If it does it again on the way to Whitechapel in the morning i shall re-install the maps.

First time using them myself, but they seemed to be compitant. Have seen them recomended by others on here, hence trying them. Don't know if the £178 tyres, valve and balance is a good price for 2x tourance but i'm happy. Phoned yesterday tyres in AM today.

Just checked my 2610 at home and deliberately chose an area straddling an area with and without detailed maps and Greg is right, once you've gone off a detailed mapset, it shows the basemap - not the white with diagonal yellow lines I'd thought. :o

I'd be tempted to reload the maps of the London area (to save time) just to see if it happens again, and if it doesn't then reload the lot.

Have been using my 2610 around London for the last 18months, and have the whole of the UK loaded in detail. Works a treat. Trouble is, it tends to lose satellite signal in some areas (tall buildings), and right when you need the guidance!

But the mapping of London is really superb.

Greg..it wouldn't..'cos all you've done is show a highlighted map for uploading against a section not selected for upload, not a detailed (already uploaded) against core loaded base map...you can't show that unless you delete a map from your Mapsource directory and show the section next to it and the base map next to it ;)

Muppet ;)

Edit......sod it, it's time I went to bed

The colours show two adjacent map tiles in v8. I suspect that it's less than a coincidence that they coincide with "area of the A406 and then down the A12" as you drop off one tile and on to another.

If the second map tile isn't loaded, you ain't going to get detailed maps. If the zoom is in real close when you move onto the base map, it may appear to give a blank screen (since the basemap shows few roads - and may not have this new section of the A12 at all.)

Tosser!

Greg,

I think the scenario you have given seems to be correct, and with the tile/ location as you gave above.

The blank part did have a clear cut line giving the impression of a missing tile.

I think the page at that time was zoomed out as i was not using it for routing purposes. Where as after reloading the maps last night and routing to Whitechapel this am, the mapping was excellent as should have been expected before.

Thanks to all for your input
