Despite the risk of annoying others, I'm posting this without having used the Search Button.

Will the remote from a 2610 work with a Nav.II?

I rarely drive but when I do, a remote would be good. I've seen one for sale @ £20.00, not sure if it's good price or not but it got me thinking.

where's PanEuropean when you need him?

by the way what every happened to him ...he seemed to know everything about garmin

The NAV 2 should come with a GARMIN branded remote. Mine did, and it works perfectly. Come to think of it, everything is branded GARMIN except the GPS unit itself.

Bought mine second hand, didn't know a remote came with it, so didn't check.

Spoke to the previous owner, he said it never came with one?

Anyone got one for sale? I found one on a GPS forum but no fu***r ever replies to posts or PM's:rolleyes:

Spoke to local BMW dealer, told that the Nav.II was never supplied with a Remonte Control?

Anyone know if a 2610 Remote works on a Nav.II?

If so, anyone got one for sale?

Can you buy them new separately?

Thanks

Steve

I bought my NAV 2 second hand too, although my bike had the dedicated BMW mount already fitted as the last owner kept his unit for the car and left me the mount. Like I said earlier, the GARMIN branded remote works perfectly with the Nav 2 which is basically a rebadged 2610.

As a side issue, my dealer tells me the 2610 fits in the BMW mount and works when bike powered, but the mount extra buttons will not work. I haven't tried this myself as I don't have access to a 2610, but I guess BMW don't want us to buy a 'cheaper' GPS unit than theirs. The only feature I find useful on the mount buttons is the IN/OUT functions for changing the screen detail/size whilst riding with gloved hands.

My remote is a GARMIN one, part number 011-00859-00. You can buy them from GARMIN directly and I don't think they are expensive.

I saw this on the web, but note it has a different part number to mine although it looks identical:

Its part number is 010-10369-00

Mine is part number 011-00859-00 and has the FCC and CE approved logos.

You could try calling GARMIN UK on 0870 850 1242, press option 2 for customer services, you may be in a queue for a while. Ask for Mark Timms if he is available as he seems to be the most helpful guy there and got me sorted when the others wouldn't, (some of the others are a bit 'jobsworth'.)

Well I'm replying to the thread, but it's with a question rather than an answer. - Sorry Steve. :D

Can either of you guys let me know if the remote is actually any use? I've got a chance of a second hand 2620 without remote, is it gonna be a problem?

2620 - a big no-no for bike use

The 2620 is a 2610 with a Microdrive instead of a CF card & no good on a bike as the vibes will destroy it. I believe at least one guy on the Adv. Riders site found out the hard way.

Garmin Europe told me yesterday that a new remote should cost £15-£20. At that price I may give it a go for in-car use.

Just one question then guys, if the microdrive in the 2620 is prone to failing, why are BMW selling the Navigator 2 'Plus' GPS units now with a 2 GB microdrive instead of a CF card, could this be a rebadged 2620 unit ?

I suspect that a few GS owners taking their shiny new Nav 2 'Plus' units down the beaten track will be needing repairs fairly soon then. Glad I got the old skool Nav 2 unit.

Is the microdrive removable for a CF card, or is it a built-in drive ??

Incidentally, my Nav 2 slipped out of the cradle mount in a car park whilst fitting it in place and before I could catch it, it fell down between my fuel tank and fork legs, bouncing all the way until it rebounded off my front mudguard onto the tarmac. A few small scratches but it still works fine. I doubt a microdrive would be able to survive such a shock.

my nav II came with a 2GB Flash Card not a micro-drive - got it 3 weeks ago...

Sorry, was busy at work.

The remote for the BMW Nav 2 and the remote for any SP 26xx product are identical. I have a Nav 2, and use a remote from my SP 2650.

FWIW - although Garmin says those remotes are not waterproof, I have had one stuck onto my clutch fluid reservior for the last 2 years - have never removed it, even when washing the bike - it still works fine.

I think that might be a misconception. The only Garmin GPSR's I have ever seen that had a microdrive in them were the very, very early models that had a door on the side of them that allowed you to physically remove the microdrive, same as you would physically remove a CF card.

If your GPSR does not have a door on it - in other words, if the memory for cartographic storage is sealed inside the unit - then I am pretty sure it is solid state memory, not a microdrive. Garmin changed over to solid state memory because it was cheaper than using microdrives.
