2610 sometimes swaps display mode?

Hi All,

I did 900 miles at the weekend, Basingstoke to Edinburgh and back, motorway up, B-rode return, testing out the 2610 in its new RAM mounting with a power cable jury-rigged from a homemade BMW->cigarette adaptor.

On the ride north, perhaps a dozen times over the 7hr ride, the screen stopped tracking my route and instead spontaneously changed into panning-mode, putting up a the white mouse-like "map pointer" arrow that you use for marking out areas of a map, making waypoints, etc, whilst you rode off the top of the screen.

Pressing the "Page" button restores it to following your route, but I was wondering:
  1. Is it buggered / got a dodgy switch?
  2. Or do they all do this?
  3. Maybe it was to do with the bright sunlight confusing the infrared port? Seems unlikely, but it only happened once on the overcast Sunday...
  4. Or is it vibration induced from the RAM mount?
  5. Other?

I have experianced the same problem, not sure what it is, was thinking of talking to Garmin.
When I am listening to the unit and this happens it is accompanied 2 or 3 audio beeps.

Just got back from a 1800 mile jaunt from the Pyrennes / France and had the problem loads of times (well maybe 10) on one day (again accompanied by spurious beeps), but other days it was fine. The days it happened tended to be hot and sunny, so put it down to Infa red port, or dirt on the screen & temp differential caused by the sunlight. It also happened once when I road past a mobile phone tower / mast thingy.

Didn't happen at all on the last 2 days, so not that bothered.

PS I can heartily recommend the road to N 42 37.894 E 001 28.951 :)

Just got back from 2 weeks in France & Corsica and noticed the problem seemed to be worse in the afternoon.
Spoke to Garmin yesterday afternoon and explained the problem and they said it could be the infrared sensor being affected by sunlight and suggested I mask the sensor up and try it. Bingo no more problem so will be returning the unit as requested for a replacement.

They'll replace it? Wow. I'll try some gaffer-tape over the sensor and see how it goes. Thanks!

Thanks for the update - if it gets annoying I'll give them a bell, but it's the first time it's happened to be. I'll see how it goes through the next couple of months.

Cheers
