How long did it take you to download all of Europe? I bought a 2Gb card planning to do just that, but the timer was saying that it would take 5 hours (and getting longer) to download it all. I think in the end I just downloaded about 5 countries.

Hmmm......... I bought a 2Gb CF card for mine too, but although I have managed to download UK and Ireland onto it, it won't be having any of those European maps downloaded to it!!! It keeps reporting a fault with my Garmin  Anyone else had a problem?

Is it possible that your unlock code is only for UK and Ireland? I know with the Quest there was a regular version and a Deluxe version, that latter had full European coverage and ISTR that the former had UK only but an additional unlock code could be purchased from Garmin to make the rest of the European mapping on the CD available.

If you have the box that the unit came in it should say on the outside what coverage is included.

Not sure if you got to Spain by boat (Portsmouth > Bilbao?), even if you didn't I've just plotted a route from Banbury using the stops you've suggested and it uses, in the main, the same tiles both ways.

Try doing the same but instead of returning from Valancia via Andora and Millau try Monaco > Bern > Luxembourg > Banbury. That takes up 348MB which exceeds the memory capabilities of the Quest by quite a margin.

Conversely doing the same route using City Select V6 (I don't have v7 but imagine the results would be similar) only takes up 121MB which fits into the 243MB available on the Quest with no problem.

By having the far bigger map tile sizes in the current City Navigator means that you're including a lot of off-route data that you don't need. Using the smaller tiles you can add off-route tiles where you think you may want to explore giving more control to the user. Sorely tempted to get one of the 2610s currently on offer but SWMBO would kill me.

Garmin's comment on the issue

....Plymouth to Santander.......

My point really was that, real world,......for me at any rate.......the quest does the trick. The battery power, and small...shove in your pocket size...being what sold me on it. I have actually walked around with it in my hand, to find a specific hotel in a city centre.

I can see the attraction of having all of Europe, at street level, on the 2610s card.......I really wanted a quest2, but was put off by reports of reliability issues.

Horses for courses eh?................... :)

Like you I was drawn to the Quest 2 but read about the redraw problems. Got my Quest at a bargain price on eBay and am very happy with it for my purposes. Was just warning that that it's not suitable for extended touring due to the limited memory combined with the greater requirement of the same by the most recent mapping. Of course one could use the base-map or even a paper map for parts of the journey.

Sure what more could you need? Once you've visited everywhere in UK and Ireland you'll be knackered.. :D Steer clear of that foreign food and those foreign women. :thumb And we Irish people sometimes call ourselves Europeans too, when the mood suits..

On a more serious note, your problem is down to a couple of possibilites:
1) Your PC/OS/Maposurce install/USB drivers are knackered. Can you install Mapsource and the maps on a different PC and try the upload again?
2) Your CF card is knackered. Can you try another one?

Oh, and just to stay on topic, I have a Quest and prefer it to the 2610 because it has an internal battery (I use it for hiking in the mountains Geo-tagging my photos, etc).. I would buy a 2610 too, if I was a little more liquid but the Quest will do the job in the meantime.

Gamin 2610

This is now at £190 at gpsw.co.uk and I suspect that as it is discontinued it will soon be sold out! It is still fully guaranteed and has full suppoert from Gamin. I would hesitate NO LONGER!!!!!!!!!!!

I 2nd that :thumb

I have this, which solved my only issue, with the Quest!

As regards the rest, I to use mine in the car, on the bike, walking, it does everything I want it to. Using in Europe, I upload the maps around the route I plan to do, and usually find more than enough space on the little Quest, for this. Next year I'm going to France. I certainly won't need street level mapping for the rest of Europe. :thumb

But if the 2610 is going for that price, go for it....but it ain't compact.

I've had both

I owned a Quest 1 for about 18 months (before some chav nicked it) and was really pleased with it in every way.

However, when it came to replacing it, I could get a replacement Quest or 2610 for the same price, and like you I followed the same dilemma. In the end i plumped for the 2610 and I have to say i'm really pleased I did.

The one draw back for me is the bulkiness of the unit. The Quest was so easily portable, whereas the 2610 really is a brick. However, having the memory expansion available and the larger (touch screen) more than makes up for it.

For my money, the 2610 is the better buy, and it's also a tried and tested robust unit, you know exactly what you're getting and it does exactly what it says on the tin!

Pro's over Quest - Bigger screen, touch screen, expandable memory

Con's over Quest - More Bulky, no internal battery.

Other than these pro's and con's, the unit's perform in much the same way, so decide which of the above are more important to you, and you have you're answer.

Good luck

Let us know what you decide!!
