....will it work?

I know I touched on this question a while back, but I think it was in the For Sale or Wanted forum and now I can't find it.

So we're off to visit my brother in April and will be doing a bit of a road trip, so I thought a satnav would be helpful. As you can guess I have a 2610 with European basemap, City Nav 8 and Worldmap, but I presume it won't be much good in USA.

Can I do anything to make it work?

Will it be easier to maybe buy a 2nd hand North American one (same model as Mrs GL is quite familiar with these)?

Maybe someone has one they'd like to lend us? :thumb

Whatever the answer, please keep it simple(ish) as even now I've just tried looking to see which version of Worldmap I've got a Runtime error and can't open Mapscource now - bother (I'll try the old reboot and see what happens)

Cheers in advance, Lee

It'll work ok.

Just need some US mapping, and worldmap will give a similar appearance to the US basemap.

Buying a US model might work out easier, if you're happy with all that entails :eek

The simplest thing would be to source of copy of City Navigator North America and install the map tiles for the area in which you're going to be travelling on the CF card for your 2610.

The European basemap only becomes an issue when the unit zooms out and that's easily cured by zooming back in to a level where you return to the installed maps rather than the basemap.

I've navigated around the Western USA for three weeks during each of the past 3 years using my European basemap (I believe it's more correctly called Atlantic basemap) StreetpilotIII in exactly this way. For the first two years I used an old copy of US Roads and Recreation which doesn't autoroute but for this year, a very nice man on Adv Rider sent me a brand new and unopened copy of City Navigator US v8.

If you can't source a copy of City Navigator US then you could perhaps try to get a copy of City Select which doesn't require an unlock code and is therefore more freely available. If you load the maps using a program called Metrowhizz this converts the City Select maps to enable autorouting.

Problem solved!!!!!!!

Got a North American 2610 on ebay for £75 and had it sent to my brother over there.

Cheaper than hiring one, and any visitors going to see him will be able to borrow it.

Also brother has offered to put updated maps on it as he'll use it when no-one else has it!!

Just a point of interest, if you have a Garmin GPS with the wrong base map for where your using it, just install World Map for where your riding, along with your normal detailed mapping (City Navigator v...). When you zoom out World Map becomes your base map and looks just fine :thumb2
