Hi all,

Just about about to get a second hand 2610 that will come with version 6 & 7 software. Question is, whats the differrence between them and the new version 8 software ?

I dont do any foreign touring and so am not bothered about europe or anywhere else being on it.

A quick answer would be most appreciated peeps.

Cheers,

Paul

I believe it mostly just new roads and junctions. The waypoints on version 8 are hardly any use anyway. Version 8 is at times wildy out of date at times even now. New version due in the new year.

I wouldn't worry too much about the very latest mapping, although obviously you would use them if you had them. I'm still on Version 7 maps (because my antiquated computer couldn't read Version 8 which came on DVD not a CD) and I've had no problem. I recently spent a week in Europe including Berlin and Brugge city centres a few weeks ago and the only "faults" I found were 2 rounadbouts that had been built since Version 7 had been prepared. No big deal really.

New Mapping is available each year via Garmin usually after Christmas, we are currently on version 8.

Version 7 will be fine around most of the UK, just missing a few new roads and junctions. Make sure you get the full 25 character unlock code for your GPS and all the discs.

Hope its dead cheap as these are now £189 new from various GPS warehouses

Im not gonna buy the second hand one now, they wanted £170 for it with version 6 & 7 software and the bike mount kit. I think im gonna go for a new one. I might even try and play the stores off each other re the prices.

no mapping can be 100% up to date as roads /junctions/misc changes happen every day.i was in andermatt in swiz in the summer and watched workers change a t junction into a r bout in 10 mins.i was in mt local gps supplier last week and told him the tale.he said it can take 2 yrs for info to reach units/upgrades.they r garmin top dealers.
new will always be best if you've got the penny's :thumb

A god plan... if you buy now, you will get the v8 maps with the unit, and be entitled to a free v9 upgrade in January. So even if you're not too concerned about European mapping, at least you own maps will be two years more up to date. Plus you get the peace of mind of the warranty.

And it's only 175 quid here:

Be careful. I don't want this to sound pedantic, but you will only get Version 9 free provided you register your unit after Version 9 is released.

When you unlock your maps, it will ask you whether you want to register the unit with Garmin. I can't remember the exact wording, but IIRC there are 2 options, one of which will let you register later. Thats the one you want. :thumb
