Hi,
I have a Streetpilot 2720, which I update regularly with the lifetime update.
However, each time I update maps, a previous version remains on the
unit. For example, maps recently updated to CN europe 2012.40, and version 2011.10 is still there. I can disable the older map detail, but can't seem to clear the memory to allow more of the update to install?
I contacted Garmin support, who say that because the unit cannot go into Mass Storage mode when connected to the PC, the maps can't be cleared.
Unless anyone here knows another way................

Cheers

If it works like the 2820 try this.

Connect to the computer in USB mode. In the Garmin folder locate gmapprom and back it up on another folder in your documents. Delete the original file. If there is a file named gmapsupp, back that up too and delete it. Switch off the unit and switch back on, selecting Garmin mode this time. Open Mapsource, select your maps and send to the unit. This is assuming you have the latest unlocked maps already installed in Mapsource. If you back up and delete the language files in the voice folder, keeping only the ones you use, you will create more space for mapping.

This worked perfectly on my 2820.

HTH.

Humbug,
That's pretty much the direction that Garmin were sending me, but it seems that the 2720 can't have the files viewable, whereas the 2820 can.
It's not a huge problem, as I'm not planning to travel extensively in the near future. It's just a bit of an annoyance!
Cheers

 Garmin seem to employ people who have very little, or no, knowledge of any of the older models. You would have though that they would get some rudimentary training or at least some help from their call centre prompting once you've told them the model you have...

I have extensive knowledge of the 2720 having converted a US version to a full Euro version (or as good as). This involved doing command-line stuff in windows, as there is no means of browsing the internal memory as there is on later models, was a bit scary as I feared turning my GPS into an expensive door stop. Garmin said it wasn't possible which made me more determined, with the help of a Dutch guy who had the same problem I managed to do it.

All this might not be necessary though; Firstly how are you updating your mapping? Are you using the Web Updater application and letting that write one of the pre-defined regional mapping sets to your 2720 or are you saving to your PC and using the 'send to device' command in Mapsource (or using MapInstall, which essentially does the same thing)?
