Im in the process of deciding on a GPS, and at this moment feel the 2720 is the current choice.

I understand that Garmins own motorcycle mount is out of stock everywhere? :spitfire Does this mount differ from that offered by RAM mounts or am I missing something?

http://www.ram-mount-uk.com/ram-hol-ga9.htm

Can I purchase the power cable from Garmin and use the RAM mount instead, what is the advantage and disadvantage? I obviously dont want to get the GPS and find I am unable to use it because of the mount.

I understand that I still need the ball mount and connector arm.

Thanks in advance

You can use the RAM-HOL-GA9 cradle to hold he gps .. but to power it shall require the garmin power lead 010-10495-02 but like the mount is scarce like hen's teeth. I am unaware if there any any third party alternatives on the market due to the connector pad which slides into the place on the rear of the case. Its being looked at but won't be a quick fix, so you'll need to carrying the hunt.

Using a RAM mount, with the RAM cradle you'll need a diamond base in the mount kit (eg RAM-B-149, 149Z or 149ZA) whereas the Garmin cradles use a four hole pattern (AMPS), so the mount kit will need a round base instead (eg RAM-B-149Z-Q1 or RAM-B-149Z-G1) for a tubular 1" handlebars, add RAP-319 if going onto smaller bars.

Thanks for that information RAM man. So without the power cable, that only Garmin produce but cannot supply, the unit is unusable on my GS???

Adapt(or) and overcome

Don't despair there is a way...

had an SPIII for many years - didn't know garmin did leads or mounts so improvised (unit was velcro'd to clocks and flyscreen on XJR 1300 for many miles - no issues, easy detach etc.)

Recently got 2720 with garmin universal mount - didn't realise that another thingy was needed to fix to bike (GS12) to allow universal mount to fit so went to Homebase bought 4 joining plates, 4mm screws, washers and locknuts and fix the mount to the handlebars in centre of yoke - works a treat

Electrics -

get halfords cigar lighter extension (CLE) (single preferred, multiple ok but will need to find space - see later)

if you've got an accessories socket:-

get BMW accessories plug - about £7, remove standard plug unit from CLE and use BMW thing (comes with in line fuse built in)

if you havent got socket

remove plug from CPE, replace +ve with in line fuse and connect to suitable +ve and -ve

then..

plug into socket on bike and use car kit supplied by garmin - route cable under tank/panels and out to location of unit (take care removing/refitting GS12 side panels front clip is tricky and if not put back properly will lead to panel coming off / folding back - see threads)

voila

Note - space is limited on the 12, I stored toolkit and tray elsewhere when travelling and the car kit and CLE socket should be waterproofed as bets as possible - clingfilm and bag and spray of WD40

In answer to your question Mermoto, yes you will have to wait for the Garmin lead. If you remember, I told you at Burnham that I'd bought a 2720. Well the cradle and lead turned up today so I've fitted it. I used the short RAM mount which I think is ideal. However, I can't get any sound out of it but I'll pose a question on that seperately.

Cheers, Colin.

Hi Colin, thanks for that. What lead did you get then, was it the two ended one with the garmin connector and the audio jack socket? I believe the other end has bare wires?

I spoke to David H at the BMF (Hi David) he had a genuine lead, I believe, but I think he said the standard lead that came with the garmin could be utilised?? However does the standard lead have the audio jack socket as I thought the standard lead had a plug with built in speaker for in car use??

Im still undecided whether to get the 2720 with a RAM cradle and wait for the Garmin power/audio lead or just get the Tomtom Rider and be done with it

Ah, now I have read this message again and Im even more confused. JFC, what about the audio socket??

Hi Mermoto,
On the standard car kit cable you get the 2720 connector on one end and then a combined power plug and speaker. I wouldn't tear that apart but you could probably make something out of it if you knew what you were doing.

In the motorcycle mounting kit cables you get the 2720 connector and a audio out socket on one end going into a splitter then the other end has two power wires with a fuse holder.

You can have a look at mine if you like, I'm in Maldon.

Cheers, Colin.

Mermoto :banghead:

try again - less wine

install a cigarette lighter socket on your bike and use the garmin supplied car kit (install a multi socket and you can power garmin, charge phone etc...)

audio - I don't use

The Garmin mount seems nicer than the RAM mount since it has a lower profile and has a convenient cable holder molded into it for use when the unit is not plugged in. As for the wiring, I'm not sure if this is a third-party solution or a rebranded Garmin cable... g10495-2 about half way down.
