HI - I've just bought a Garmin 2820 complete with latest set of NT maps on it - last owner had lifetime update package. It's now registered in my name but I have no copy of Trip & Waypoint Manager, nor any maps on my PC.

Is there a way I can move a copy of the maps from the 2820 to my PC and do route planning / waypoints etc then move the routes / waypoints back to my 2820?

Thanks in advance.
Rich.

The only way that you can do this is by using Basecamp which is capable of reading the maps on the GPS. Though I've not tested with the StreetPilots despite having a 2720, it works with my Nuvi 765T.

The one problem that might make this difficult is that the 2820 is USB1 ISTR, this will make transfer of the mapping to your computer very slow.

Better to buy a lifetime update yourself for £50 and load the mapping to your PC. At least then you'll have the latest mapping when the the next release comes out and thereafter.

You could use the free Open Source Mapping - no unlock codes etc and very easy to load into Mapsource for planning and then into your 2820

I've been running NavFree on my Android phone (this uses OpernStreetMap data) for a few trips in the car. For the money (i.e. nowt) it's pretty good but I have come across a few anomalies such as being directed further down the road, doing a U turn and then turning left at a set of light rather than just turning right (as if there's a no right turn sign, but there never has been) and being directed the wrong way around a roundabout in Birmingham last weekend. Obviously a dash of common sense overrides these.

The OpenStreetMap mapping is also not NT orientated so, whilst still being usable, will use more of the limited fixed memory in the 2820.

OpenStreetMap mapping has areas with better detail that the Garmin mapping but conversely the opposite is true in other areas. As it evolves further it's going to become a better option though.

If on a tight budget it would do the job but currently the Garmin mapping is better IMHO.

Trip and waypoint manager costs the grand sum of 22.99 from Garmin just download and away you go.

Is that going to help the situation re. him not having maps on his PC. From what I understand Trip and Waypoint Manager only provides a basic World basemap. This is for contextual reference and would be useless for route planning even if it is routeable.

The only free option I can think of that will provide detailed mapping on his PC would be to do a 'hooky' install of Mapsource using this technique. And then grab the area of Europe that he needs from OpenStreetMap. There will be obvious differences between that mapping and what he has installed on his 2820 that will inevitably cause issues on the road. TBH, if it were me, I'd stump up the £50 for the NuMaps Lifetime subscription to save the hassle (not much more than twice Trip and Waypoint Manager for the full solution).

Thanks folks.

SO - I've loaded Basecamp on to the PC and connected the 2820, which is shown as a device on the left hand side of the Basecamp screen. How can I now copy the installed NT maps from the 2820 into Basecamp. I've tried all I can but can't find an option to copy them.

Cheers

Just tried it with Basecamp and my 2720 and no dice, It downloaded; tracks, routes and way-points only.

However, my Nuvi works, shows and downloads the mapping despite having it on the PC as well.

This got me thinking. Plugging in the Nuvi switches it to Mass Storage mode. The 2720 doesn't have a Mass Storage mode but the 2820 does.

Have a look at page 23 of the manual and try again. It'll take an absolute age to transfer the mapping if it works though, probably hours (GB over USB1). I think you'll need to do this each time as I don't think having transferred the mapping it stores it on your PC. Will be unusable in practice I'll wager.
