Greg I have to urge utmost caution before you follow any of the advice given thus far. Nobody has asked for the date of manufacture for your gate or a serial number. Without this basic but vital information, tribological opinions are fundamentally unsound and can cause sickness, death, or even, in extreme cases, invalidation of any warranty.

Obtain all relevant data before jumping to conclusions - no point in shutting the gate after it has been bolted.
