30k Service cost ... just wondering ...

John at Rydales has quoted £260 plus VAT for the 30k service on my 1150GS. This includes replacing front and rear brake pads.

How does that sound?

That's a lot!! The 30K service is the minor service. Most dealers will charge in the region of £140-180 for the service (including VAT)and then the cost of the brake pads on top of that.

Get your brake pads from Steptoe. I think he charges in the region of £15-18 per caliper which is half the price of the genuine BMW pads.

It so happens he`s right. It is a high price,and his estimation of costs is on the ball too.
It would indeed be worth buying the pads elsewhere and fitting them yourself...I too struggle with the concept of people paying dealers to do menial tasks like pad replacement.

Seems a lot to me.

I paid about £170 for a major 24k service at the end of last summer at Rydales. 30k service is not a lot of work.

I bet John's computer has included BMW's cash cow, the "annual service" which, according to the manual I have, involves re-doing stuff included in the 6/12/24 schedules. The only exceptions being brake & clutch fluid which should not need annual changing IMO. (My car's brake fluid, according to a test that checks the boiling point, was still in grade after 3 years).

Ask John for a requote without the annual service. I bet it will be £75 to £100 cheaper.

Southport, if you think of it if a 24k service is going to cost round 220 - 240 and the 30k is only a minor service then you would expect the 30k to be a lot less

24K service is a "big" one, should include fuel filter change - service £170 - plus a fuel filter change £30 -

those prices all parts and labour - and loan 1150 GS

I did my own 24k service, with the help of some of the East Anglian crowd. Cost me about £100 in bits and bobs, filters, oils etc... I also changed the poly v-belt at the same time.

That same service cost nearly £300 on my old R1100RS a few years ago.

If you feel confident enough to do it then diy servicing isn't very difficult. If you're like me then you'll need to buy a few tools but otherwise everything is quite straightforward. The most difficult thing on the 24k was getting the gubbins out of the tank to change the fuel filter and that was more fiddly than difficult.

I'll be doing the 30k when it's due and save even more money than if it was serviced at the dealers.

My old RS did 66k before I got my GS and it was dealer serviced every time so I've got a very good idea how much dealer servicing costs. Nothing against the dealer but I find that I prefer doing it myself.

I will continue to use my dealer for the brake fluid changes and for tyres but otherwise I'm saving more money to spend on more bits for the GS

don't want to jump in on the 30,000 thread but anyone know rough cost of a 42,000 service on a 1100GS?

just bought it and it's about 800 miles away from 42K

not going to a main dealer so looking for guestimate of a little shop doing it.

and any info on what is involved? if it's nothing major might have a go myself but haven't done anything more than putting petrol in the bike so far

Here's another thing to think about servicing… the trust you need in the person who works on your bike.
After all you ride the thing at high speeds…you don't want someone forgetting' to fully tighten a nut or bolt. You would also want someone who would service the bike as if it was his own.

Also you don't want charged for work that BMW say should be done but does not really need done, brake fluid change etc.

And you want someone to warn you of any problem that you may not have noticed and not asked for as part of the servicing.

Also the age of the bike... you would want FSH by BMW for the first couple of years if you're only keeping the bike that long before selling to get a fresher model.

If you have an older bike or are going to keep the bike a long time full BMW service history is not as important. You won't make the extra cost of the BMW servicing back when you sell the bike.

So Steptoes deals would seem just the thing for many people.
And for some reason people trust him

Even if you have to travel a fair bit to reach him it could still save you money over BMW costs.. and he gives free cheese sticks
