Not so happy with my new GS12. I'm trying to be patient but I'm getting to my limit. Changing from 3rd to 4th gear many times happens that transmission goes again to the 3rd gear by itself. The only way to avoid this is when I'm very positive gearing up. This happens only from 3rd to 4th gear.
I took my bike to a local dealer and they said they tested it and did not find any problem.
Well I have been riding motorcycles in the last 25 years and this is my 4th BMW GS. I'm not an expert but at least I can understand when something is not right just comparing this bike with all the other ones that I had in the past. This problem almost caused me a big accident two days ago. I'm always trying to improve my ridding skills but how to change gears I thought I have already learned many years ago.
Has anybody experienced something similar with this new GS12?

I occasionally get a jump out of 3rd gear, but it's normally when I'm changing without using the clutch and haven't been positive enough with the gearlever. I also blame the BMW GS1 boots with which you have to use the edge of the boot to change.

Are your changes with or without clutch?

Mine was extremely hard to change from first to second for the first two or three times from cold. It's now done 7000 miles and it's getting much better. Maybe yours will do the same in time.

Tim, to be honest I never tryied to change gears without the cluth lever. This could be a next step in my learning curve..
Dinger I put almost 3k kilometers on the clock and I was really expecting to have a smoother motorcycle after my first service (1K). This always happened with all the other BMW bikes that I had but not with this.
It's funny to have probably the best BMW bike ever made but at the same time having not the same pleasure I always had with my previous models.
For me the front end is a little bit too light, the power delivered by this new engine is enjoyable only between 3000 and 5000 RPM and the transmision is giving me the problem mentioned before. My previous model was the ADV so maybe this is the reason for part of my complains.
Anyway I can't accept the possibility of trading my GS for any other bike other than a GS... so I've better find out a way to overcome these points. I can get DIVORCED from my wifes but never from my bikes!!!!

This has happened to me a few times but I attributed this to a fault on my part for not engaging the lever properly. Since I have been paying closer attention to my shifting, it has not jumped out of gear once and mine is still quite new, only 3000 km on the clock.

Had the same problem on mine between 3rd and 4th. Cured by adjusting the gear lever down so it's easier to make a positive change. You can just loosen the pinch bolt on the lever and rotate the lever anti-clockwise but, I found that the side stand hit the end of the lever by doing it this way, as it moved it down too far. The best way to make the adjustment with the tie rod on the linkage that can be seen at the rear of the box. Had mine done by the dealer but it's easy enough to do it yourself. It only takes a few minutes and will transform the gear change.

Tried to do a link to this but, failed. GS monkey has some intructions on how to make the adjustment. Do a forum search on 'Gearbox problems' and there's a thread with the intructions in it.
