4 Day scotland tour - Advise

i agree - Day 2 will be a slog - we lived in Lochinver for 7 years (we had the pub / restaurant in the village - sold last year) i know those roads well.

Rode your planned route a couple of years ago.
Your Day 2 itinerary will be nigh purgatory trying to cover that distance along the north and west coasts of Scotland.
They are some of the most beautiful roads and you'll be riding just for the sake of covering distance IMHO.
Good luck, though.

Thanks haditlowered,

i'm thinking of ditching the JOG bit and heading more or less strait up on day 2 from Inverness toTongue basically using the Scotland tour route day 3 in bikers britain. Many people have said slogging all the way upto JOG on the A9 is pointless and i'll be missing so much ove the main highland routs.

The plan is changing / refining every month but all these bits of advise are helping to shape the final route.

Cheers

Bonar Bridge up to Toungue or alternatively Bonar Bridge up past loch shin is stunning and takes you to Laxford Bridge and onto the best stretch of road in the UK imo.

yes its looking like am - inverness, bonar bridge, lairg, Aitnaharra, tongue, Duness, 115 miles ish
pm - Durness ,Laxford Bridge, B869 to drumbeg, lochinver, ledmore junction, ullapool 118 miles ish

Thanks for the tip Cabby:cool:

Theres a campsite in Achmelvich, even if you don't camp the beach is worth a visit - its stunning.
https://www.google.co.uk/search?cli...-8&oe=UTF-8&gfe_rd=cr&ei=9H8_VY3HGYqcOr3MgMgG which is a stunning beachside site, with a chippy if its open -

also, Lochinver has a new bunkhouse,
http://lochinverbunkhouse.com

I can recommend a few B&B's in Lochinver too if you plan on staying over night, you can get fuel in Lochinver too, and as a pointer if your in the shite - Stoer petrol station has 24 hour card service at the petrol pump, even when the filling station is closed :)

http://www.kyleskuhotel.co.uk - Great food, and a view to die for, run by two friends of ours, WELL WORTH a lunch stop if your passing - and google the B869, this is a super bit of single track road from Kylesku to Lochinver - i used to cycle it often - its hilly, tight but a great road, you can visit Stoer Lighthouse off that road and get a nice wee snack at Leigh Sedgley's remote food van - she's always open!! http://www.living-the-dream.org.uk

We owned http://www.caberfeidhlochinver.co.uk for 7 years - so i can recommend you go there for a pint of Skye ale, and a great beer garden if your in Lochinver, the Pie shop is next door, most people know Lochinver pie shop - if you go in, tell them Simon & Jen from The Caberfeidh (caber-fay) sent you...

also.... Theres a tiny dead end road in Lochinver that will give you the most amazing view of Suliven, (google Suilven) i can tell where to find it - its only a mile, tarmac but a dead end with a fantastic highland glen view.

If you need anything else just ask.. Cheers

"Day 2 Inverness to Ulapool via JoG across to durness then down to ullapool 277.5 miles"

I did Ullapool to Thurso in not much more than a morning, recently (taking in Inverpolly and Lochinver) - adding in the run via JOG to Inverness doesn't seem like much of a stretch in a day, to be honest?

Lochinver to Ullapool
you can go straight out to Ledmore Junction... thats a fast amazing bit of road, Ardvreck Castle ruins are along the way, it's 19 miles to Ledmore Junction, most people overshoot the turning... OR take the back road :):) I cant find the road number so google Lochinver, look at the google map.. the road goes off past Lochinver School, Strathan, Badnaban, Inverkircaig...etc, follow it until you hit a Tee junction at Badnagyle - its the only Tee junction you will come to - Turn left, and that takes you back to the Ullapool Road along Loch Lurgainn, you will be 5 miles from Ullapool at the end of that road.

Bonar Bridge up to Toungue or alternatively Bonar Bridge up past loch shin is stunning and takes you to Laxford Bridge and onto the best stretch of road in the UK imo.

Loch Cul Dromannan

Google this Loch, "Loch Cul Dromannan" you'll be passing it anyway, whichever way you go out of Lochinver to Ullapool. it's a tiny Loch between Lochinver and Ullapool, its right on the roadside by Drumrunie Junction, if it's a calm day, you have to see it.... it's so small most people pass it without even seeing it, theres a few trees on the roadside that obscure it a little, but it's a real gem... theres a lay-by / gateway opposite where you can park

My shots of it....

I suppose it's each to their own...
We spent a day riding from Torridon to Durness, and thoroughly enjoyed every mile of it on the winding coastal roads. Doing a nigh 300-mile day is something I keep for the times I have to get places in a hurry. :thumb2

I hear ya joeBiff , but having never done this kinda thing before its all going to be learning and a mini adventure. Th wife is nagging me about doing it on my own ( she does worry bless) so I may put the route up in the open invites section once I get it sorted.
