On my way to Italy. Now a well trodden route for me, so yesterday I decided to squeeze a little more out of the tank so the next fill up was a max fill. Well that was the plan

I was on a big empty road (A62) going through the south Ardennes (I don't go through France, too boring), somehow I missed my turn off, at which point I had 10 miles showing as the range . Managed to turn off later and head back, but the hills are long and big...

In short, I rolled into the tankstelle with 4 miles left - yes, only according to dash. Next nearest chance was probably 5 miles away

What are other people's experience with accuracy of the fuel computer?

**Bike is a 2011 TC btw. At this fill up the trip meter was showing 352 miles for that last tank fill - which was from my home in N London - bike is fully loaded, with crap!

I never trust the accuracy of any fuel computer. I was caught out years ago in a BMW 3 series in Germany, on a Sunday, and am slightly paranoid now! I always fill up when touring when the opportunity arises, and certainly when I am below half a tank.

On the photo rally here in Ireland some of the points are off the beaten track. I was showing 20 miles left on the dash when I left the main road to get one in particular, 10 miles later I was still travelling looking for the point. Getting pretty concerned at this stage. 4 miles later picture taken I went in search of a petrol station. I came to a school were the classes were about to finish and the parents waiting outside to collect the children. I asked directions to the nearest petrol station. About 5 miles that way I was told. Clenching buttocks I headed off a a slow pace freewheeling down hills until I arrived at the petrol station, with 2 miles to spare on the dash.

Might have helped if you posted how much fuel you squeezed in with that range left. For all we know you only fitted in 30 litres and could have gone another 50 miles. A few weeks ago I had done 388 miles on a tankful. Range said 28 miles left. I fitted in just under 33 litres. Yesterday my range said 18 miles left and I put in 34.3 litres, just about right.

Did 19 miles past zero range on my 1200gs lc. Still running fine. Pump said it took 20 litres.

T700 was the worst fuel gauge. It would say zero range but still have 5 litres remaining.

Yea. Good point. I'll dig out the receipt. I was just really happy to have made it!?@#£&!

388 miles sounds impressive! But what sort of riding? loaded and m/way riding? Curious.

My Subaru failthfully tracks the mpg down ... to 10 miles range then shows ---

and then its buttock clenching time if you dont know where the next fuel stop is .... eeek

A couple of times though its been bloody close to the cough and splutter

but thats how you find out just how much a tank will hold

This is me filling from a fuel can at the side of the road in Scotland a few years ago with apparently 20 miles left in the tank. The fuel gauge is a bloody liar 🤥

when the fuel strip was working never ever filled until under 20 miles to go for 10 years - before the recall for a free pump it would run perfectly at 11 miles to go - but the stupid thing ran out twice at 13 miles on the replacement

with the float in there it was still running as it ran to 1 mile to go - but I did get 21.5 liters in the 20 liters tank when I filled it up

on the cars they were known to be very accurate - one idiot from a long standing independent specialist thought it was just fine to go on a test drive with 3 miles showing - we ran out 200m from getting back and he was surprised it didn't make it

Back in August I enjoyed a 200+ mile day trip.

Rolled in to the filling station less than a mile from home with Range at -7 miles.

Was surprised to fill 18.47 litres into my 18L tank. On the side stand.

Was the 2nd time I’d played the russian roulette game and gone negative range, but was heading home.

Would never dick around on tour.

And always go by distance on Trip 2 not the gauge.

Normal swiftish riding, not racing about and also riding to and from work.
You think 388 is impressive. Almost ran dry a few years back coming out of the Vosges in France hunting for a garage. 467 miles and squeezed 36.67 litres in the tank. That was close to running out.

As a rule I don’t trust the fuel gauge and go more by the trip meter, and even then I tend to fill up at about 100 miles, if only to get off the bike for ten minutes.

That's ok if you brim it every time on the smaller GS tank. On the GSA a working fuel gauge is a nessesity.
Sometimes if is nice to not brim it to keep the weight down like on the trails in Iceland etc

One trip there I completely lost track of how much fuel I had in the tank when my fuel strip packed just before going. Total pita.

I have had as much as 367 miles to a tankful and as little as 280 fast motorway in Germany. If I'd gone by the trip meter in the first instance I woul have probably only put in about 19 litres and could have ridden another 150 miles or more.

Ok. Found receipt. I put in 33.22ltrs

But I don't actually know what the OEM capacity spec is on the adventure?

Didn't know it showed a negative reading. That's like enduring into the Twilight zone... What does that mean, you owe the tank?

The fuel strips really sounds like a nightmare. And you're right. If you get onto the motorway and keep it all going at high speed, it eats the fuel. So I've stopped doing that

Yea. I really feared this happening. Would have cost me hours...! Your fuel gauge sounds like my ex girlfriend

Spec is 33 litres for GSA. However I have put 35 in more than once, as many others will also tell you. Usually fill up with 32/33 litres, never run out, and never felt like it's about to. I am pretty confident therefore that 35 litres is realistic but others may be a little more cautious!

I've put in 35+ litres in many times. Over 36 on a few occasions in mine.

I meant to type I've had as much as 467 miles to a tankful and as little as 280. A huge difference.
