45000 miler......downsides

Hi new here currently running a VFR800 which I love to bits but my mate has a GS1200 and yep I want one! looking at a 2004 plate with 45000 miles on the clock right money by comparison, what if any downsides am I likely to find in my 45000 miles? what should I look for?

Mines just done 42000 and still going strong, I suppose keep eye on final drive and a good service history and that's about it.

ref final drive,check for movement in the rear wheel bearings ,spin the wheel and feel for any roughness.any play or if feels tight or any noises it will want a refurb.
budget on @£350 for recon
take a good general look at the bike,if there is a lot of corrosion on the bike it gives a fair indication to the way it has been treated.just cos it is cheap does not mean it is any good.
GS1200's can be quite expensive to repair, if in doubt walk away.there are shed loads out there, take your time and find a nice example.

if possible take someone whos got one and can have a good look with you - it should have a full service history the first ones being BMW if the later ones are from well known Tossers off here should be no probs
if services are from a BMW dealer just give them a polite call and ask them if the bike is known to them
to get a good idea if its kept well is to check it against Doyle's bike up for sale on here now - its a lovely one
mileage is nothing ive got 52k on mine now with warranty up to 80k
and to be really honest the more miles you put on the bike the better it runs

Did you get it?

As everyone else said, the mileage is nothing if it's got a good history, and you've checked for play in the bearings etc.
I've always fully serviced every 2nd hand bike I've ever owned as soon as I've got it home....clearly have trust issues so if you're concerned do that, at least you'll know everything's up to date.

The GS is a really easy bike to service, everything mechanical is reasonably accessible and straight forward, the final drive service can take a bit of time but it's easy to do.
I know of two others with over 100,000 miles on their GS's, both home serviced, and with the exception of wear and tear nothing has gone wrong or needed replacement.

45000 miler downsides

Didn't buy the GS took the advice had a good look round it and it was a bit tatty even though my mate (he's got one) said it was mainly cosmetic that gave a bad impression so left it where it was. still looking will get what I want eventually, thansk for all the feeedback
