Hi guys,

I'm heading to Marrakech with the missus at the end of February. I will, alas, be leaving the bike behind (Ryanair wanted way too much to ship it), but as we want to see the Atlas mountains and Ait Ben Haddou we're planning to hire a 4WD for a couple of days.

I want to drive it myself, not hire with a driver. I have the Morocco top maps installed in my Zumo ready to go :)

The rough plan so far is to:
  • Pick up the 4wd early Saturday morning (Feb 26)
  • Drive the N9 across the Tichka Pass, then to Telouet and the piste south to Ait Ben Haddou (I saw a post by Tim Cullis saying this road was improved last year so expecting it should be safe enough for a solo 4wd vehicle. If not will turn back.)
  • Spend the night at Ait Ben Haddou or nearby.
  • Drive via the tarmac and the N9 back to Marrakech on Sunday, and drop off the 4wd before our 5pm filght. (Feb 27)

Questions...

* Can anyone recommend a good self-drive 4WD rental place? The vehicle doesn't have to be fancy, just reliable. Size doesn't matter too much.

* Should we book from here or take our chances "on the ground" given that it's off season (I think)?

* Any 4WD hire companies to steer clear of?

Thanks for your help.

PM Mr Ifan, I remember he hired one a few years ago.......I think it may have needed a respray when he took it back:D

No need for a 4WD. I did it three times last year and it was improved each time. When I last did it in November it was a smooth balasted piste which was just fine for 2WD vehicles. I spoke to Peter at Bikershome last week and he says it has now been asphalted. So expect tour buses and 7-metre motorhomes!

The Telouet kasbah is worth visiting as it's currently being rennovated. Further on there's a salt mine (salt pans) at N31 17.295 W7 10.685

Bikershome is a good place to stay for some home cooking. Follow signs to Zagora, N30 53.862 W6 54.083.
