We…. did Venice last year on the bike.…. we stayed in Castello di godego ( near Bassano del grappa ) .
then we went into Venice by train, a 50 minute journey on clean, quiet trains which cost us about 10 euros return each.
the hotel was very good but not expensive and was a short walk from the station.

the hotel was on a major junction but it wasn’t a problem due to the double glazing.
It had underground parking for the bike, good rooms and good food.
I would really recommend it as a base to go into Venice as it’s a lot cheaper than Venetian hotels.

Couldn't agree more about visiting Venice on the train....by far the best way. The station is right in the middle and meters away from the vaporetto stops...train and an all day vaporetto pass is all you need....and avoid the main holiday periods...
We went when we stayed at Desenzano on Lake Garda last year.
But Venice is a 'must see' for sure...

good info thanks for this ...Ive been to Venice a few years back and found it sooo expensive, Water taxi in etc ,so staying just outside and taking the train makes a lot of sense, cheers

We did much the same last time we did Venice. Stayed at Padua & used the train - about 30 mins IIRC.

The Best Western Galileo makes a decent base, with excellent underground parking ............. https://www.hotelgalileopadova.it/

Whilst Venice has a fascination for most travellers, it has become hugely over commercialised & is further blighted by vast cruise liners disgorging their human cargo. On the other hand, Padua itself, a historic seat of learning, is well worth exploring; far more enjoyable in many ways, away from the hordes.

There is a certain irony that you visited Venice (because you wanted to. adding to the hordes and its commercialisation) but now, now having done it, you apparently don’t want others to go there.

Aha! A basic denunciation of human frailty!
Venice is an astonishing place, but try to visit when fewer folk are being astonished ....

My son lives in Castello di Godego and it is a good base to visit Venice but Castel Franco which is a short train ride is on a railway crossroads and you can be anywhere in northern Italy in a few hours.

My lads Girlfriend went to uni in Venice and it doesn’t need to be an expensive place to be if you go where the locals go.

In 2014, wife and I drove to stay near lake Garda for a week. We opted for an AirB&B instead of hotel.

Parked the car at the train station in Desenzano del Garda and took a train for a long day trip to Venice. It was very easy and by far quicker and cheaper compared to using autostrada and having to park somewhere outside of Venice. This also meant that we could have a few drinks in the evening sun.
It was just great!

You could do exactly same even if you are out that way in the motorcycle. Have a day off the bike, yet still have a great time.

Which is where, please?
I was more referring to various places so the answer is Venice, that being said the photo in my earlier post was taken at the cafe/bar in the pic below close to the railway station, it was Feb 2022.

We flew to Venice years several years ago, stayed in a very expensive hotel on an island in the lagoon and used the very, very expensive fast speed boat taxi that docked almost in the hotel lobby - we spent a fortune and felt terribly posh :)

Thank you.

The reviews are good, too.

A strange take, so I shall clarify .................

My intention was to raise awareness that the place can be mega busy in high season, especially if you happen to hit the streets when a cruise ship arrives. By all means go, see for yourself, but it's probably best to visit in the 'shoulder season' these days: -

For those serious about the history of the place, then Francesco da Mosto's 4 part series from 2004 (BBC/OU) is a good starting place: -

Wapping was only winding you up (I sense?).

Railways. We invented them but the Europeans seem to have all but perfected them. I believe the Eurostar direct schedule is to be extended into northern Germany. (You currently have to change in Brussels etc) From there (Koln, Dusseldorf etc) you should be able to get very fast connections to pretty much anywhere in Europe.

I remember seeing a huge poster in France, showing how all the major capitals of Europe will, at some point, be linked directly by high speed trains.

I’d like to get a train here in N E Lincs and get off at the cote dazur. that would be an adventure
